So your question is about fretboard wear I'm guessing. Maple discolors, but should last longer than rosewood. Both are pretty hard.

It is a very good question, but I don't know if there is a meaningful answer.

I have one bass that I know the history of. The second owner played it for 32 years in a blues trio, five nights a week. He had some fret work done at the bottom, but I am still playing on the original fret board.

I guess you can wear one out, but I have never had a bass pass though my hands that needed that type of repair.

Maybe it would be more noticeable on a fretless bass?

If you are talking about discoloration- maple boards will definitely show wear faster, although newer non-lacquer finished maple takes along time to wear through.

Rosewood wears a very long time and frets on any neck really take the punishment before fingerboards.

Although Rotosound round wound strings are the hardest on frets and fingerboards, I really think that you have to look at fretless basses before you start seeing actual fingerboards wearing out.

I have a 1959 Precision bass that is still on its original frets and fingerboard and I will not wear it out on my lifetime, but I do not use hard alloy roundwound strings on it.

Maple shows wear quicker but does not get grooves like rosewood does.

Agree to that. I have seen the grooves in rosewood.

Maple's grain is tighter. It's a bit harder than Rosewood.
