I know a Thunderbird is not a Fender invention, but I need help from you guys here. The A string, especially at the 5th fret, sounds completely dead compared to the other strings. I've corrected intonation and tried changing the string heights, as well as pickup heights but the pickups don't seem to want to move. What is the problem? Is the neck warped? How do I solve it? Shall I take it back to the store? Cheers, Liam.

Any number of causes. Dead string. Dead spot (dead note). Bad nut slot. Pickup height too close or too distant. Bad pickup (not likely since it has 2.)

I tried posting a more in depth reply but it kept getting a technical error. Add weight to headstock, such as a C-clamp. See if that helps dead spot. Put on a known good string. Check nut slot for slop. Try that stuff. Have a feeling it might be a combination of causes.

Is it one of those situations where the correctly tuned fretted A just sounds a little too different from the open A string? Which one stands out in a negative way on a recording...probably the fretted. You could just raise the action up high on the strings so that they all sound bonkie when pressed to the neck.

Bonkie! Yes this is a bonkie issue, as opposed to a honkie issue which is a completely different thing.

Sometimes you just get a bad string that will drive you nuts.

I rec. that you replace the string or the whole set of bass strings if needed.

If you still have the problem then it is the bass, but I'll bet that it goes away with the bad string.

Good Luck with it.

Thanks for all your replies, I took all of the advice into account and re-setup and re-strung the bass. It turns out it was actually something a lot less complicated, its the acoustics of the room I play it in haha. It sounded dead in the room, but in another larger one it sounded just as loud as the others. Thanks anyway!
