Every older MM pick guard I've seen has cracked at the jack or control area.
I have 2. I'm keeping one original but the other has already been messed up.
The Mustang body looks similar so I am wondering if Mustang pick guard and control plate will fit. I'm going to have to refinish it again so the holes don't matter, I can fill them.

I would think a modern aftermarket replacement for the MM would be better than mish-moshing it. There is not exactly a shortage of reproduction Musicmaster pickguards and they don't cost any more than a Mustang guard. Since the instrument is already refinished with plans to refinish it again, it will matter even less that the guard isn't original Fender since it is just a player anyway.

I've never tried putting a Mustang Bass guard on a Musicmaster Bass nor seen it done but if it does fit then the pickup cutout is wrong and you would also have to add the Mustang control plate. It would just be easier and cheaper to use the right pickguard and keep the screws tight and try to avoid stepping on the instrument cable which almost always is why these guards break.

WD Music does a Musicmaster repro starting at $29. There are many other pickguard suppliers listed here: http://brotherdave.com/add_parts.htm

I have no problem routing out the body for new pickups, it has a Jazz pu in it now that sounds great. The whole reason for doing this is for the control plate.
I bought this MM years ago for $40 from a teenager who really messed it up so I don't need it stock.
My wife plays a beautiful black MM she likes because of the short neck. I will keep it original. (She loves my 65 Jazz but can't play the long neck all night)

I would stay with an original or aftermarket pickguard made to fit the bass. If you want to do some work, try to better support/secure the jack inside the cavity. The Mustang pickguard will not work easily. But your thought about using a Mustang control plate along with a reworked aftermarket MM pickguard is kind of a nifty idea. Not sure if the control plate will cover the cavity but it is worth looking into. It would certainly beef it up and since it is non original already, cool.

I pulled these two out for comparison. The control plate areas are very similar in size, shape and measurement, the MM just a touch wider around the tone knob, the spacing on center from jack to tone to volume is identical...it might just work. I wish I had the time to pull them apart, see the cavities a try the exchange, but that is not an option at the moment.

Thanks Brother Dave. That is the 69 and it is a dandy. The 68 is the one we talked about before. The waiting is over, it goes to Gord Miller on Monday as he is now ready for it.....really looking forward to seeing his work. That amateur refin will come back Daphne Blue with matching headstock. Thanks again for the referral.

Steve
