My wife plays bass in a classic country band. Several years ago we owned a Fender Lyte and she really liked it. For some reason we sold it. I wish we hadn't because she is wanting to go back to something like that model.
The weight was good and she liked the active pups. Does Fender make a bass now which is comparable to the Fender Lyte series? Thanks

There is not a P-Bass Lyte version currently available. There are many Lytes in the used market and they are usually very affordable. The trick though is finding one that hasn't been beaten up or hacked up with modifications. They were very successful thus many were sold. The numbers in the used market have kept the price down because they are not considered collectible. But they are great instruments and I consider the good used ones a real bargain. You can often find one for about the same or less than a new Mexican Standard.

If you want to buy brand new then the more affordable active basses currently available include the Precision Bass Special which is probably the current Fender closest in tonal performance to the Lyte because of the active P/J design. Slightly more money gets you a Fender Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar which uses 2 Jazz pickups but adds the option of passive operation.

The P-Bass Special is heavier and bigger than a Lyte since it is essentially a traditional size P-Bass body with a Jazz neck. The Jaguar has a Jazz neck on the unique Jag body shape but has 2 Jazz pickups.

I'd also look at the "Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special." It has active EQ, P/J pickups and is cheaper than even a used Lyte. It is a remarkable value for the money and frankly it does remind me a little of a Lyte when playing it. The Squier Jag is quite lightweight having a basswood body. There are both short scale and long scale versions of the Squier Jag available.

The Fender Active Jazz is also worth a look but has a full sized Jazz body with the associated weight that entails and since it lacks a Precision pickup it doesn't sound quite like a Lyte. Still though she might want to look at one.

Precision Bass Lytes are almost always available. I took a quick peek at an aution site and found one with a hardshell case for $350 and another asking $450 but accepting offers.

I know I have seen them going for even less than that, but I don't recall if they had cases.
