Does anyone have the US production numbers for the HM4 or HM4 Ultra?

I picked up a Heartfield DR4 this morning which leaves me with just one bass missing to complete my Fender collection.

I have only seen one US HM4 (not for sale), and never an Ultra. Am I chasing a fairytale?

Fender Japan HM basses come up for sale now and then. Since they were so affordable (about $300) there were far more of them sold than the pricier USA Ultras. Plus they were made longer than the USA HM ULTRA model. I saw a Fender Japan HM 4 string on eBay during or just before the holidays. I liked the Japanese HM basses I tried back int he early 90's, but never bought one.

USA made HM Ultra's are scarce and hardly ever show up outside of private collections but I did see one for sale at a guitar show about 3 years ago, however since I wasn't in the market I didn't notice the asking price. To be honest these were pretty scarce even when they were an active catalog item and Ultras were only made for just over 2 yrs. Since they were so expensive new (something like $1,300 and up) there just weren't that many sold.

These basses were produced about the same time that the Heartfield project was cranking out cutting edge instruments. The HM's were more like an update of the traditional designs. The Heartfields started with a clean slate.

Thanks Dave. I thought they made an HM4 in the states very briefly before moving it to Japan. From your response I am thinking I am mistaken, and that only the Ultra was made here. True?

Feel free to share my contact info if one of these is ever in your travel net.
