Well, if you like the sound coming from the bass through your amp, and you want to spend the money, buy it. Granted, you never said how much money you were going to spend or how much the Jay T bass cost.

The Jay T bass cost around 250 but isa little crappy, the frets are high of the neck and gives it a ringing sond when you play down on the neck and finger board. It also has a couple nicks in it.
I was thinking about spendin about 300-400 (maybe even more) to get a nice quality bass that will last me long.

now if i were to get a new bass what would you prefer if i like music along the lines of Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Oasis. Thnx though.

If you like the RHCP the J Bass would be a good start. With the $ you want to spend you can get an MIM from local music store, the reason is you can hagle and get the price down a bit from the music store. On line prices no hagling unless they're getting rid of the old stock, it would be slashed prices. Another option, ck out the Squire Vintage Modified or the Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass V Active, this thing is a 5 string with active pups for less than $300, it's a great value. I have the Vintage Modified 70's bass, and I luv it. I was one of those people that thought Squiers were just for beginners and low craftsmanship. If you get the higher end Squiers, they're good basses. Try them all out, make a smart decision from trying all the other basses. You might even end up buying a totally different bass altogether. Good luck man.

Don't do it!! It's a waste. No name brands like that have no re-sale value. If you give up playing, you'll get little in return when you try to sell it. Fender Basses hold their value, you can't go wrong.

If you plan to stay with bass playing, you are going to want a better instrument eventually anyway, so you might as well wait till you can afford a better one & buy it.

I just played a JT MusicMan copy, it sounded pretty good. I personally won't buy one. As far as value, a Fender you want to get rid of after 1 year of playing is not worth anything either. A lot of people try to sell on line, but how many more trade it in or sell it to a music store for a huge loss. If he buys the cheap bass and get rid of it in a year, he lost $200, he gets a Fender, he might lose more than that on a MIM. It's all relative. Most people with vintage basses here didn't buy it as vintage either.

Well my advice is to choose wisely. Make sure that what you purchase you won't want to get rid of in one year and that you don't overpay for the item in the first place. I have vintage gear & you are right, I did not pay sky hi prices for them. I held on to them. they went up in value. It's funny, there was a time when the 50's & 60's Fender's were the only one's that got any respect. I happened to like the 70's basses. I snatched up a few in the early 80's for a few hundred each. They go for $2500 & up now. Even the early "Crafted in Japan" fender re-issues are getting collectible. They were scoffed at when they first came out. Some of the Fender MIM are fine instruments. I especially like the RI 72 Telecaster with the 2 humbuckers. That is an awesome guitar.

Award winning basses (Bass Player Magazine).

A nice article/review of the Squier Basses.

For about the price of the bass you had mentioned you can get a 'Fender' sound. What a nice way to start.

For just a little more, $479.00, you can get a Fender Standard Jazz bass.

...and if you go to a local music store, might get it even cheaper if you haggle.

Hey you don't even have to get a new fender standard MIM jazz bass mine is from 2002 or 2003 based on the serial number and i got it at a pawn shop for 275 with a case in great condition. All you have to do is look around and do your research. My Standard Jazz sounds amazing and i prefer it over many other high priced basses. It has a great feel and easy playability. What is great about the Standard series also is that they are easilly modifiable. I have loaded mine up with Fender SCN pickups Hipshot Tuners, and a Badass II bridge. So you get a good used Standard Jazz a little older then once you star raking in more dough you make some modifications on this baby and it will never let you down. By the way even without the modifications the bass will still sound amazing. Good luck on choosing your bass!

Good call. The Mexican Fender guitars and basses have come a long way. As a few others have mentioned, shop around. You might play 20 of the same model and one in that 20 just feels right. Sometimes it's just the set up from the factory that makes a difference, but sometimes it's the shape of the neck, the fit of the neck pocket, the way the nut is finished... I've played more than a few great Mexican guitars and also my fair share of poor American ones.
