Used to use Dean Markley bass flats-great big fat bottom end-had to get them imported at the time (pre internet) as they weren't easily available in UK. Changed to Thomastik JF344 after the demise of the DM's. Proved a great move, especially on fretless Jazz. Tone suits me fine,no great tension, quite flexible and good longevity. Wondered at the time if the nylon core flats Fender marketed might have been worth a look. Anyone used these at all ? Academic, I suppose as they are not on the current product listing.

I have my one and only active setup with TI JF344 Jazz Flats. They last forever, well years anyway. The only thing I don't like about them is the very low tension. I tend to overplay them, especially when switching to the active from any other bass.

My favorite string isn't a flat, it is the TI EB344 Power Bass rounds.

Okay, I put a set of Black Diamond Pure Jazz Flats on my 50th Anny Jazz today. I will not play it until tomorrow but my first impression is not good, and it really saddens me to say that, since these are local guys.

Esthetically, all four strings had a different colored threading. Not sure why, but not attractive IMO.

Physically, the flat windings are not tight against the prior one, to the point that the D is actually rough to the touch. You run your finger up and down a flat and it should feel ultra smooth, this is not the case, in fact you can see gaps between wraps. I have not measured, but the strings also seem to lack constancy in diameter. I actually took the bass over to my tech to see if it was just me.

I am going to play them, and call and talk to them, before I make a final comment. Perhaps I got a bad set. But based on visuals, very disappointing.

The round wounds are okay so far, but the flats are initially disappointing. Stay tuned, I will report honestly.

Wow- the things you describe about the flats would be total failure to me if I made them. Not good at all. I wonder how much a string winding machine would be? I think I would make the next killer generation of strings if I could- like titanium roundwound !!! Platinum flats. Not Rascal Flats.

Anyway I'm interested in hearing about the strings affprod. Do tell.

Hey Linnin,

Thanks. I ordered a set of GHS M3050s to try, and added a Sting Fuel from your other post. Have a good one!

Steve
