I'm gonna have to change my strings before I even attempt an audition of any kind. The one's I have sound better than ever..but now won't stay in tune. Life isn't fair.

They sure as heck won't be flatwound.

What are the flats you are talking about that now won't hold tuning?

Wow, had a really cool tour of The Cavanaugh Company this morning and got to see their Super Sensitive and Black Diamond strings being made. (and Bari mouthpieces and reeds, which was also interesting) No pictures allowed because all their machines are proprietary and made in house. Most everything is automated and pretty much runs without attention up to where the strings are cut to length and assembled. Even then the process is quite automated and computer controlled. The flatteners and winders, etc. are all set up to immediately shut down if anything comes out of tolerance, which is very cool.

Jim gave me the tour. He is also a bassist, so he is coming to see my collection. He gave me samples of coated nickel strings and is bringing a samples of the uncoated and the flats as they were stock out this morning. I did get to see an A String in production, so that was cool, but it was mostly orchestra strings running this morning. His dad, John, is the guy I met through Rotary, and is Chairman. He was there too so we got to shoot the breeze about the "good ole days" in music and the string business. Great stories! His father was the one that came up with the ideas for their equipment and they have just expanded upon his original concepts.

They do a lot of private labeling, but did not say for who, nor did I see anything that gave me a clue. Very interesting morning. I look forward to trying their product, especially the flats.

You had yourself a great day! They'll have a great day when they come to see your basses.

As many instruments as you have to setup, you need all the free strings you can get!

LOL! Yup, I will take all the freebies I can get.

Brother Dave, you might be interested in this as a Tele owner. I put a set of La Bella 0760M's on my blonde 72 Tele, following in the footsteps of Mr. Jamerson and Mr. Dunn. They are huge, but they are smooth and mellow. Let's see how long they last but it is a pretty sweet string on first opinion.

Yep. At one time the Labella 760M's were all I used because it was about all I could get. In 1974 after they had wrecked the necks on a 71 Jazz and a 73 Jazz I chose to abandon them. I switched to Gibson flats, then Gibson Nylons and then Rotosound rounds. I find the GHS 3050 REGULAR Precision Flatwound set (not the M's but the ones that say just 3050) sound close but have just enough less tension I feel safe to use them. Currently use those on a 51 RI P-Bass. Sort of reminds me of 760M's. The Labella 760M is a great historic string and that is where it will remain for me, in my history.

Oh, the other reason I abandoned the Labella 760M was their tendency to break on the body-through setup on my 68 TELECASTER BASS. This was a weekly or bi-weekly happening. Back then they cost about $18 a set at dealer cost. I was not happy.

I haven't broken a string in a long time. Back in the day and in the eighties, it was a regular occurence. I've decided to go with the GHS 3050 REGULAR Precision Flatwound set on my Precision, this bass has never seen anythig but rounds. My little family of basses is such tat now, i have the luxury of having four basses with completely different personalities, and yes, I play them all regularly.

I'm glad that I put GHS Precision Flats on my Precision. Thanks for recommending them, brotherdave, otherwise I would have never tried them. 8)

Okay, I have to try out the GHS 3050s. I have to admit, the neck tension with the Bellas is pretty extreme. Nice sound though, I have to give them that.

I'm really paranoid of extreme tension with flats. the GHS strings aren't too taut, so far , so good.

brotherdave came through with an accurate evaluation again.

Used to use Dean Markley bass flats-great big fat bottom end-had to get them imported at the time (pre internet) as they weren't easily available in UK. Changed to Thomastik JF344 after the demise of the DM's. Proved a great move, especially on fretless Jazz. Tone suits me fine,no great tension, quite flexible and good longevity. Wondered at the time if the nylon core flats Fender marketed might have been worth a look. Anyone used these at all ? Academic, I suppose as they are not on the current product listing.

Welcome to the forum jackmac :) I love Tomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats too. Great tone and feel. I tried a set of those old Fender tapewounds in like 1973 or so. Absolutely HATED them. Worst strings that I have ever played in my entire life. See? Your life suddenly got better! And I saved you money too! WOW!
