A rep at D'Addario told me, definitely no on the Fender strings being manufactured by D'Addario. A good flat larger gauge string is usually intended to give a deeper, mellow sound.

I wonder if it is because of the colored ball ends that everyone assumed that Fender started having D'Addario produce their strings? Don't want to derail the thread though! That's a topic for another thread, and may even have been covered elsewhere on the forum... :?:

While we're de-railing this thread anyway, I'll add a humorous anecdote. A new strap arrived today, after putting it on my Strat I went upstairs to the kitchen to wait for my coffee to quit brewing. I was noodling and Wifey said, "Oh, I can hear the difference in the strings when you're not playing through an amp." I told her, "Honey, this is a six string, not a bass." She was referring to the D'Addario ETB92 Nylon Tapewound Strings Mr. Nylon gifted me with.

She was a little embarrassed, but I was gracious. I told her I understood. she has no musical ability wha

tsoever and only know if she likes something or doesn't.

No biggie.

Now back to the topic!

THE NICP BLIMP IS A BLAST FROM THE PAST FOLKS!

Anywho.

TI Jazz Flats. The most un-flat sounding flat ever. I've used them at least 10 years. I have a love hate relationship with them. They last for-freaking-ever, but don't sound like a flat so if you are looking for old school bass tone it isn't in there.

Black Diamond strings that were brought up in this thread are older than any other string brand I know of that is still on the market. Black Diamond has probably been the number one string for Bluegrass guitar, banjo and mandolin longer than I've been alive. Black Diamond strings were the strings you could buy ONE AT A TIME at what were once called "Music Stores" which were located in communities large and small and often operated as a family business frequently referred to as a "Mom and Pop." So if you broke the "B" string playing rhythm at the Fiddlers Convention then you could buy one string to fix it in order to get ready for the next gig. Martin wasn't in the string business back then and most Bluegrass/Folk players were buying Black Diamond strings. Gibson was also in the string business, but more Bluegrass people bought the Black Diamonds for guitars, mandolins, banjos and fiddles. Some steel players swore by them as lasting longest. Lately Black Diamond has been making inroads into less traditionally Americana flavored players.

D'Addario has been making Fender strings since sometime in 2010. That does not make them D'Addario strings. They are still Fender strings to Fender specs but the production is merely contracted out. For example, there are still Bullet strings made for Strats. That explains why the Fender sets are different in feel and sound from similar D'Addario sets.

Fender moved into Ensenada for STRING PACKAGING in the first dang place. Pretty sad in a way that they no longer make strings there now. Fender started up their association with Ensenada in a former church where either 5 or 7 people (conflicting accounts) were hired to package Fender strings. Fender has been in Ensenada ever since. One of the first people they hired on day one was Esther Marron who packaged string sets. She is STILL working at Fender in Ensenada and is now the most senior employee there. Funny but she doesn't look SENIOR to me.

Image

It just does not make any sense to me that Fender could outsource strings made by anyone else in the USA for less than they could make their own in Ensenada. It just does not add up, yet obviously it happened. Funny but about the time Martin moved their string production to Mexico, Fender shut theirs down. Wonder if there is something related there but probably not. Just the conspiracy theorist in me coming out.

This isn't the first time Fender outsourced string sets. Leo Fender contracted the V.C. Squier Company of Battle Creek, MI to make and package Fender strings for retail back in the day and then bought out V.C. Squier shortly before selling everything to CBS so he could go into the string business. CBS moved string production to Fullerton shuttering the Battle Creek plant. GHS opened in Battle Creek almost the moment Squier shut down.

IT's deja vu all over again!

Wow, Black Diamond Strings, I remember them well. Do they still make them? I used them back in the day and bought a set individually.

Interestingly enough, Jim Cavanaugh, who I had met and who I assumed was a manufacturers rep for Black Diamond Strings, is actually the manufacturer. I am going to get some samples of both their round and flat offerings, and I am setting up a time and date to go watch them being produced. Who would have thought, right here in Sarasota, Florida.

Sometimes I amaze myself with how little I know about my own backyard!

That info is correct. Black Diamond brand strings used to be made by National Musical String Company in New Brunswick, NJ. The Cavanaugh's bought National out in 2001 and moved everything to Sarasota, FL to consolidate with their existing "Super-Sensitive" brand that makes orchestra instrument strings and accessories like rosin. Black Diamond goes back to the 1890's and "Super-Sensitive" is another old brand name going back to the 1930's.

The Cavanaughs also own the Bari brand that makes reeds and mouthpieces for woodwinds and National Pick which makes the old time favorite metal finger picks for steel guitar players that have been around since about 1930. Pretty diverse little family empire there. I didn't even know they made electric bass strings till about a year ago. I always thought of Black Diamond as an acoustic instrument option but not an electric option. Mr. Cavanaugh would be a nice guy to know and a photo tour of the Black Diamond operation would be very interesting. I look forward to hearing what you think about their electric bass strings of today.

I am getting a tour next Monday. Looking forward to seeing the operation. I will take a couple pics. Turns out it was actually Jim's dad, John, that I had met earlier so both will be on hand to show me the ropes.

I'm gonna have to change my strings before I even attempt an audition of any kind. The one's I have sound better than ever..but now won't stay in tune. Life isn't fair.

They sure as heck won't be flatwound.

I Have DR NEONs on my Jazz and couldn't be happier. Best roundwound string I've ever played. Just ordered a new set today from bass strings online. Yellow E & D with Orange A & G! Yipes! Stripes! Super Contrast. 8)
