I collect vintage Fender basses so the Zone takes me out of my realm of knowledge. There is a really nice looking 2001 on ebay for $1100 delivered. Problem is I have no idea what they cost originally, how many were made, current value - nada. None of my reference materials refer to that one since it is just too new. I'm not a big fan of active basses but have a few, but I have this little gremlin that sees a Fender model I don't have and makes me buy it.

Can anyone educate me on the economics side of this bass?

Thanks for the couple PMs. If the US Zone was only made in 2003 there is another little oops with the dating matrix which shows DZ1+++++ as 2001. That being said I dug out my 2013 Vintage Price Guide and did, in fact, find a 2003 Zone valued in excellent condition at 950-1150, so the one on ebay is a bit high. As always, you all have been a great help. Any other comments are welcome.

The USA Zone was not surprisingly the better of the two. These were the USA and Mexican adaptation of the Japanese made Fender P-Bass Lyte. The USA one had 18 Volt electronics making it far more desirable and came with a factory hard case. I still think the P-Bass Lyte is often a bargain in the used market. Pretty sure I'd not pay $1100 even for a new old stock USA Zone though. The way things stand at the moment they have little value growth potential at that price point and I'd agree that price is on the high side. Nice instruments, but just not much demand for them right now. The Mexican ones are often seen for about the same or even less than the Japanese made Lytes. A really good fusion style instrument though. Who knows what demand or the coolness factor will be for them in the future though. Some unknown prodigy hits it big as a bass star playing one and the demand will soar, so can't say things will always be the way they are now. But until something like that happens I don't see demand or value going up. There are lots of them around so they are not exactly scarce. The 2006 60th Anniversary models seem to be the most valuable for some reason, perhaps because fewer were made that year as they were discontinued in 2006, but I'm not sure if that is the only reason.
