I collect Fender basses and have two Telecasters and want to sell one. Both were purchased as 72s but one has a 4s serial number which I think is 73. On the Fender product dating chart it says it could be anywhere from 73-75. I pulled the neck looking for the big date stamp but it was not there. On the neck butt there was the number 0300 2823. How do I better pin down the year of this bass so I can honestly represent it?

Second question, maybe should be a second topic, I am new so forgive me. I am looking at an Urge bass. It is listed as an 89 and the serial number seems to reflect that, but the "other Fender Basses" article on the Fender site says the Urge was not produced until 1993. I don't own this one so I can't look inside it. Is there a way I can zero in on the year?

Thanks for any help you can send my way.

The volume and tone pots (if original to each of your Telecaster Basses) will yield date clues if you know how to correctly interpret the EIA codes stamped on their housings.

I got my answer about the Urge via a Larry Hartke, Hartke Systems post in 2011. He has both the #1 and #4 prototype on display. He was given the #4 and the #1 in on loan. There were 4 prototypes made, all in 1992 and production began in 1993. It seems all the serial number start SE9 which shows up on most dating tools at 1989. Both the neck and body are date stamped however.

Thought you might be interested in seeing the pic of the protos. The yellow one is the #4. Only yellow one ever produced.

0300 2823

What I found is;

0300 = Telecaster
28 = 28th week
2 = 1972
3 = Wedensday
