Back in the mid 1980s Fender released the Performer Bass which was crafted in Japan and featured a radically sleek alder body, two special-design humbucking pickups, 3-ply white pickguard, active electronics, Swinger/Musiclander "arrow'-shaped headstock and a two octave rosewood fretboard.

In fact there were two versions of the Performer available. The original Japanese STANDARD Performer Bass with the features mentioned above and an ELITE version which was manufactured in the United States.

The ELITE Performer, which was the more expensive, lacked off the pickguard and sported 3 humbuckers and an ebony fretboard. It was also available in a 5-string version with the tuners placed into a 3+2 arrangement.

I never saw the existence of an Elite Performer bass until recently.
