Are you referring to Squires? If so (and with regards to any Fender model that isn't American), it's all in the quality. My Mexican made Telecaster has a much different feel and tone than my American made Strat, and not just because they're two different guitars either. Fender uses different parts for their different levels of guitars. If you're thinking about getting a Fender, I would suggest picking up a used Standard. It'll be much better than a Squire counterpart, will retain some value, and you'll be happy with it throughout your musical progression.

Hope this helped!

no they are not squires ! they are being sold in a music store here in ireland as genuine fenders but made in china they are really good and play well but the amp i was using in the shop was not functioning well and was distorting so could not determine how well the pick ups worked .i would assume they are licensed to be made in china ,was just wondering if they are being sold in your part of the world ? thanks for your reply .

I've attached a link. They are in fact labeled "Fender", all are made in China. There have been some favorable and positive reviews.

The Fender MODERN PLAYER series is some of the best Asian made instruments currently in production.

There are many levels of instruments made in China. Some good, some awful. I mean absolutely awful. The FENDER branded China made stuff is mostly not awful. In addition there are other Asian made gems. Jay Turser and SX have made some surprisingly good bass instruments for the money.

HOWEVER they ALL have to be judged individually, not collectively. You can have 2 of the same model side by side and one of them is great, the other is not so great. The crapshoot is not based or country of origin. It is based on how you as a player interact with the instrument. That really is all there is to it.

I loved the Classic Vibe stuff. If Fender China starts using traditional American used woods with their production skill...look out.

I have a Modern Player Jaguar (awesome but noisy P-90's)and an American made Telecaster, 60th anniversary model. The neck finish and smoothness of the frets on the Jag puts the Tele to shame. There is not one place on the Jag's neck where you can feel a fret edge as you run along the side of the neck. My Tele is a bumpy slightly edgy ride. My American made Les Paul Studio is even worse. I hope to be able to buy a Modern Player Tele. If the neck is just as sweet, replacing the pick-ups with better quality would be worth it. My Tele is noisy as hell. The typical 60 cycle stuff. Great tone, just noisy.

I am a bass player who also enjoys playing guitar.

About a month ago I played a Modern Player Telecaster Bass at a shop. The only defect I saw on the entire bass was the bridge pick up volume pot was mounted in the pick guard a little crooked. Easily fixable, but it does tell us a bit about what the QC is there. Not really surprising, and much like the Ensenada plant, I'd think the chinese instruments will steadily become more finely crafted as time goes on.

Otherwise the bass sounded and played pretty sweetly. Not a fan of the bridge, but for 550 bucks new it seemed like a decent amount of bass to me. I was actually surprised with how nice the fretwork on the neck was. Very smooth. It wasn't what I was looking for in a bass, but if it was I wouldn't have had any doubts about buying it. It seemed to be a very solid, well built instrument and could hit some nice sounds.

Modwiz have you copper shielded to ground the pickup cavities, back of the pickguard and control cavity? If not it is easily reversible.

No. Do you have a link to something that would instruct how to do so? Modding is new to me, but I am always looking expand my skill set.

Scroll down the page to the segment titled SHIELD YOUR BASS here: http://brotherdave.com/add_maint.htm

That section is about shielding basses of course but the same principles apply to a Fender Spanish electric guitar.

There are two links referenced in that piece. Those links are:
http://archive.basssessions.com/oct04/shield.html
and
http://www.artandtechnology.com.au/guitar/shielding-strat.html
(The second link relates to copper shielding a Strat but again the same principles apply.)

If you lack soldering skills read the SOLDERING IS A SKILL section on the first webpage referenced in this post and check out the links listed in the soldering section to develop them a bit first.

One good thing about the copper tape/sheeting shielding to ground set up is that it is easy removable like it was never there if you solder the ground wire to the side or top of the pot so it is hidden under the pickguard and once removed an appraiser would never think to look there for signs of mods.

Ask and ye shall receive. Thanks, Dave.

They look and sound great IMO. The only problem is see is the finishes look to be the kind that end up cracking off.

The modern player series are entry level Fenders.

"Throughout its history, Fender® has always made a special point of welcoming new players to the family by offering entry-level instruments of remarkable style and substance (such as the Duo-Sonic™, Mustang® and Musicmaster™ models), with great sound, classic looks, solid performance and eminent affordability. The Modern Player series continues that great my-first-Fender tradition, with thoroughly modern features and several distinctively unconventional new takes on our most revered instruments-all with outstandingly attainable value."

If you have the budget stick to the MX or USA.
