Hello Fender friends,

I was hoping that someone could help me to know what my Mustang bass is worth. My daughter is turning 18 and I want to have a birthday party for her. I am out of a job right now and have decided that I would sell my 66 Mustang Bass so I can do this. I have no idea what it is worth here are some details.

It is a 66 white mustang neck stamped 17NOV66B. The original neck plate and thumb rest are missing. The neck plate was replaced by a plain neck plate with no SN The original case is with it and in good condition. The bass has been repainted but close to the original color. It was repainted in 1972 by a pro painter. There is no serious fret wear the neck is good. It has the oval tuners and the neck has really neat crazing in the finish. The electronics work perfectly. The overall condition is near perfect. I would like to sell it and not rip myself off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am the 3rd owner. You can see pics at http://www.hawgwildmotorcycledetailing.com/1.html

Thank you all I bought the bass for 900.00 in 2010

I can't rightly say what your bass is worth but the paddle tuners alone should add a significant premium to the final price -- $200 to $250.

Prices here and prices there might be two different things. I'm in North Carolina.

Vintage dealer asking prices for all-original ones of this same year range from about $2000 to nearly $2600. All the 66 Mustang Basses originally had the oval "lollipop/butterbean" Fender logo stamped tuners and the earlier Telecaster Basses used these same tuners, so it really doesn't add any value over another 66 Mustang since it was a standard feature that year.

On yours, the refinish is a huge knockoff. The missing neckplate is another markdown. This is not a collector-class instrument like the values given on the ones above but is instead player-class at best. Due the missing neckplate an appraiser might classify it as a parts class and appraise it based on the value of the individual parts instead of the instrument as a whole.

This one seems to come with the original black Tolex Fender case which does add some value. I think asking $1050 to $1100 and settling for $950 on the low side for it would be reasonable. I realize that isn't much of a return for your investment, but that is roughly what it is worth here. A dealer would probably offer in the ballpark of $400 to $600 for it in an outright sale but don't do that. Then they'd set an asking price of $1100 and settle for $1000. I'm pretty sure you can at least get your 900 out of it in a private party sale.

The neckplate is a real issue. The missing finger rest is not as critical.

Thanks Brother Dave,

At this point if I can sell it for 1000.00 that will give me enough money to throw a nice party and give my daughter some loot in the end. To be truthful I think it will be easier to let go of knowing it isn't something really collectable. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me.

God Bless,

Kyle

Just for the record- the paddle tuners used on Mustang basses are not the same as those used on the full-scale Fender basses of 1966-1968.
Mustang bass tuners are short-shaft tuners. The paddles don't extend above the headstock the same distance as those on Tele-basses or Jazz basses.

I hope that you can sell your bass for what you are asking, but it is still a tight economy and most collectors/players want at least a serial number to prove the age of the body.

Good luck with it.

Yeah you are right about the tuner shaft length but the paddle shape is similar.

I'm not sure you're going to get what you paid out of this bass. I picked up a 66 mustang bass on ebay last year for $700. Yours seems to be a better refinish job than mine (it was stripped and clear-coated back in the 70s like so many other fender basses with their peeling nitro paint jobs) but it has its original neck plate, so it's likely about even with yours value-wise. Also, I can't tell what kind of case it's in from the photo but the original should be covered in a gray mettalic cloth, not black tolex as was previously suggested.

That said, you might do better than the seller of my bass did if you include good photos when you are trying to sell it. I took a chance buying mine based on the obviously period-correct neck, plate, tuners, case and bridge. I didn't get to see the pots, underside of pickups, neck pocket or routes. Give prospective buyers a good look at all of that and it will fetch the max that it can. (That neck pocket especially, since it's refinished.)
Good luck!
