I think when Leo lefted CBS, and started Musicman, I think he made a newer version of the P-bass. The Stingray, has all the elements of his, first creation, the P-bass, while adding new features. The Stingray, and the Later Sabre, in my own opinion, which was really the jazz model. Leo had it right from the beginning. It was leo also, who said in one of his last interviews, before he passed on, there is no real purpose for a 5 string bass. Even thou, he made one, for G&L, it was against his wishes. I stood by this fact, that the electric bass, is a four string instrument ,nothing more or less, and I believe him, to this day.

I consider both the Musicman's and G&L's to be Fender's, not "Fender". It's hard to explain. He was the man though. And I am not crazy about 5-stringers. One of my fours is tuned BEAD. I do want a G&L L-2000 next.

I agree with Zod, it's Fender's (like Leo Fender's) but not a Fender bass.

You know I known a couple of Musicmans, both pre-ernie ball and post, and I had a couple of G&L's, and they fine instruments. The one about them, I couldn't deal with, was their neck widths. Two models I had, A 'narrow" Ernie ball sabre bass, and a G&L SB-2, with a "Jazz" type width, but the SB-2, didn't have a tone control(?). All and all, There all, Leo's creations, but i do prefer, if I could afford it, is an orginal 1971 Fender CBS, Precision Bass, with the "narrow" width neck, and I would add the covers , the mute, and even, the extra strap buttom behind the headstock(for that 60's feel) to it. To me, The precision Bass, is the Bass, guys, and all ways will :D

I like the P body, but the J neck, my '87 is both, that's why I luv her. I like both, I can't say one is a favorite over the other, but If I had to choose, it would be either one with both pups - like my '87.

Yeah, It is kinda odd that the SB-2 doesn't have a tone knob, but there is an easy mod to put one in, in case you did not know.
