Went to Guitar Center and played one of the Pawn Shop Reverse Jaguar Basses. It was beautiful the neck was as close to a Precision as could get, played like butter. The Humbucking Pickups were beyond powerfull and the options gave it a whole array of tone.

Pickup Configuration:
H/H

Bridge Pickup:

Reverse Jaguar® Bass Humbucking Pickup

Middle Pickup:

Reverse Jaguar® Bass Humbucking Pickup

Pickup Switching:

3-Position Toggle: Position 1. Bridge Pickup, Position 2. Bridge and Middle Pickups, Position 3. Middle Pickup

Controls:

Master Volume, Master Tone

Hardware

Bridge:

New Fender® High Mass Modern Bridge

String Nut:

Synthetic Bone

All said, so far I was seriously impressed by this fine bass guitar. Then, now this is MY opinion. The reverse body only allows you to get to the 15th. fret. For me, this was the thing that eliminated it from any future consideration. ll my basses have 20 frets and i always wish they had 22 or 24.

If you don't need to get up that far on the neck, check one out, they are beautiful in all respects.

Ever since Mitt Romney bought Guitar Center and Musicians Friend about four years ago, I can't bring myself to spend money there, despite having several friends at MF.

That's the only place I have within 30 miles that has any real equipment. Romney bought them? Glad I don't buy there any more.

Actually the "Evil Empire," as I've always referred to them, is not Mitt Romney but rather Bain Capital Partners. Governor Romney was CEO of Bain Capital for a time. He says he left in 1999 but SEC documentation says 2 years later. However he is a founder of the company and probably still has an ownership stake for all I know, but he isn't the one making decisions there and hasn't been for at least a decade.

Bain Capital purchased the then publicly held Guitar Center shares in 2007 for just under 2 billion dollars. That means Bain does in fact also own Musicians Friend since it is a subsidiary of Guitar Center. Governor Romney doesn't own it, Bain Capital Partners owns it. Gov Romney left as Bain CEO at least 5 years or as many as 7 years before Bain bought Guitar Center. However....as a founder of Bain Capital he probably still makes money off it.

If doing business with Bain Capital bothers you then you will also have to avoid:
Going to an AMC Entertainment Theater to see a movie.
Eating a Domino's Pizza.
Gadget getting at Brookstone.
Eating at Burger King.
Bargain hunting at Burlington Coat Factory.
Listening to the radio stations or watching TV stations or looking at billboards owned by Clear Channel Communications (and trust me that is most of the radio stations.)
Having a cruller & coffee at Dunkin' Donuts.
Dying or healing at a hospital owned by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).
Sleeping on a Sealy mattress.
Buying your ammo and golf balls at The Sports Authority.
Getting office supplies at Staples.
Doing your holiday shopping at Toys "R" Us or KB Toys.
Signing that 3 album deal with Warner Music Group.
Watching The Weather Channel.
Using a Totes Umbrella or Isotoner gloves.
All the above are Baines Capital companies.

Bain Capital is literally around every corner, up every street and they also own other online musical instrument sales sites too. Someone recently tried to convince me they own Harmony Central, but I don't see how that makes enough money for Bain Capital to even consider owning them.

I suppose I should clarify that "Evil Empire" is just a nickname. At first I called Clear Channel the Evil Empire. Then Bain Capital bought Clear Channel so they in essence became the Evil Empire by association. Since Bain owns Guitar Center they also are part of the Evil Empire. So I've taken to referring to Guitar Center also as The Evil Empire.

The nickname stems from my disdain for Clear Channel Communications and corporate radio in general. Anyone who was in the radio business working along happily when Clear Channel started buying up every 100 KW FM radio station from coast to coast probably feels about the same way about them. In short Clear Channel ruined radio.

It used to be that radio stations had personalities. One station was different from another and some actually were FUN to listen to. A top-40 or country station in Dallas sounded much different from a top-40 or country station in Nashville and even more different from one in Sacramento. This is the reason there was a Wolfman Jack, a Cousin Brucie, an Alan Freed and a Dr. Don Rose. Now all radio stations sound exactly the same from coast to coast. If someone gets a decent morning show going they wind up on 150 stations simultaneously. Every station has the same playlist and the same voiceover guys doing the same imaging. You can travel about anywhere and listen to radio stations across the nation and it all sounds like one big homogenous gob of mediocrity.

Anyway, when Clear Channel spent their way to the brink of bankruptcy Bain Capital came to their rescue and bought them out. Nothing delighted myself and hundreds of former radio guys more than watching Clear Channel implode and finally get what they deserved.

Those Reverse Jaguar pickups looked more like real Musicman humbuckers!

Fender did 22-fret basses between 1984 and 2009.

If you want a 22-fretter, buy a used active American Deluxe or passive Boner bass on eBay as Fender doesn't make 22-fret bass guitars anymore.

For my tastes, the basses I prefer all have 20 frets.

When Bain, yes not Romney personally, bought MF/GC, all employee stock options were paid out (I have several friends at MF, as their main call center is in SLC), and both companies became much less musician-friendly (pun intended). As for your list, I do not consume any of those products or services. I didn't know about Dominos and Burger King, but they make sense, seeing as how the LDS Church also owns large shares of both.

I once had an interview with Clear Channel, and I mentioned how musicians, including myself view them. Oddly enough, I didn't get the job.

I know what you mean about Clear Channel. Unfortunately, they bought out this alternative music station that I (or at least the song I played bass on) was getting airplay on and I believe they are going to turn it into some sort of political talk radio format. They seem to hate that genre of music, since that's not the first time that's ever happened. I guess it's too weird for the corporate sponsors tastes. Don't even get me started on the so-called classic rock format. It's the same small group of songs over and over again. They never play any album cuts or anything like that. I actually like some of the songs they do play, but with so much of a back catalogue, you'd think they could spice it up a bit. I'm sure, and know for example the Eagles had more than the song "Hotel California" or Lynyrd Skynyrd had "Free Bird." They do play a couple more songs by those, but I think you get where I'm coming from. I remember before Clear Channel, there was this station that use to play actual whole album sides on a certain time.

It figures that Guitar Center is a part of that. How typical. Speaking of music stores, near where I live, there was a music instrument store that closed down and is now a tanning salon. So much for art and culture. Sigh. Like there isn't enough of those around here and it's next to a damn beach! A few beaches, actually.

Getting back to the original post, I've had my eye on that bass, too. It seemed rather odd to me at first, but it's been growing on me. I'm not sure how the high fret access situation would work for me, but I'll give it a try if I have a chance to. I do play a few songs that are high up the neck, (not soloing, though) so that could be problematic. I'm in an electronic music situation that uses a lot of low keyboard bass, so I can get away with playing past the lower registers and not thin out the bass grove. In fact, some songs it works out better if I don't. Plus the fact we don't have a live guitarist yet, so I've done a kind of double duty there.

I hear ya' Dave. I'm a radio lover from the time I knew what one was. You're dead on- on the clear channel thing.
I spent hundreds and maybe thousands of hours switching the dial when I drove big trucks. I checked out all the stations from coast to coast. My favorite has to be WLW. They have tried to stay close to their format they've always had. Now as I travel around at night only a few stations I can pick up are any good. One is the 750 or 60 in Nashville. It's the closest I've heard to old fashion radio.

Shooo-Wheeee has this thread gone WAY off track :!: :?

oxfan, thanks for your post. Can and would you shed some more light on the Black Top Bass Humbuckers? They look absolutely delicious. Do they sound anything close to a Musicman or G&L? Do they sound good enough in your opinion to leave stock?

It's a very attractive looking bass, and with a simple flip; some different routing, and presto-changeo a left-handed Jaguar Bass! :D

While I would very much like to have a left-handed G&L there are four thousand little green reasons why I can't have one.

I would buy that bass without question, if it weren't for the body positioning. I may get one yet, but then again I want a LOT of basses. I'm just a poor underprivileged bassplayer. I only have three bass guitars and three bass amps. If anyone feels sorry for me you can send me some! :D

To really answer your question, I only played it once and was blown away by the power and tone. i don't think i'd touch it in any way to modify it.
