I sat in on bass at my church for a friend who was out of town. I'm not a bass player so used a Squier loaner. I was surprised to find that there was not volume control. Is this normal or is something wrong with the wiring on that bass?

This bass obviously has been modified or is malfunctioning.

I have heard of so called straightwire setups for recording that are the pickup wires connected to the jack with no volume or tone control.
