In January I bought a Fender Big Block P-bass at a bargain for $715 (new). When I went to my church (I play in the band) to try it out on the stage, the bass would "fart" (no other word for it) the notes I played on the E-string, but no other strings were affected.

I got the same result at my house...
... and at my friend's house...

Probably because your e-string is to far away from the neck. They can fix this in almost every musicstore:)

All of the strings are the same distance from the neck. I think I'm just going to try and sell it. If anyone'll buy it...

That bass should still be under warranty if you bought it new. Go back to the store (Fender dealer - it should be) and have them ck the neck to adjust and do the intonation. It should be free and it'll take a few minutes if they are slow. Not worth it getting rid of it, you won't make the money you'd just spent on it.

Have someone check it out. If you sell it the most you'd get would be around 400-450...It should be covered under warranty

are the pick ups looking altered in anyway?

i know sometimes if the pick up is close to the thicker strings you do get a "fart" like sound but also check to see if the nut is ok and that the strings are in the grooves properly or that wont help either.
