I was watching the Beatles video of the song "Hey Jude" and noticed George Harrison playing a Fender VI guitar, I always wondered who did the bass on that song. I know John played the 6 string bass on "Back in the USSR".

Both John and George took turns playing the Fender Bass Vi when Paul was playing keyboards.

That's why the bass on some songs sounds a bit weird.

A few six stringers played bass with other players. Jimi Hendrix played bass in a jam with Leslie West.

Lest we forget this little gem that landed a nice deal for Bob.

Bob Dylan on a 65? Jazz Bass?
Way cool!

I always wondered what he sounded like on bass?

Elvis played around with a Fender Jazz bass too!
He had a sunburst 1971 Jazz with a maple neck with black block inlays that looked just like my first Jazz bass.

Playing bass in the Jungle room!

Never heard that one about Elvis and the j bass but there is a pic out there of him holding a P on his couch. Oly white, RW, tort pg. I've also read he actually played bass on "baby I don't care". As for the Beatles I've seen pics and read about a right handed bass that john and George would use in the abbey road studio when Paul was on keys. I've seen a pic of Paul holding a fender jazz 3TB with the metal bridge and pup covers. Love that one being a fender fan. The article went on to say there were 5 or 6 songs from the white album, that he played the fender on, including back in the USSR. I love finding the old pics on the net, kind of cool.

Elvis was playing a Fender Bass when he met the Beatles!

McCartney and Lennon remembered him doing so while he was sitting on a sofa watching TV.

Yep...

He was tinkering with 5-string Wal basses many years after the Beatles' dissolution!

I'll have to admit, seeing Bob Dylan and the Beatles with Fender gear in various film and photo footage inspired me to want to have Fender, more than anything. Well, that and I've always liked the sound and feel and aesthetics of them. I guess certain image advertising works. Heh.

I wonder what became of the Fender VI that John (and I assume George played the same one) played? I never found much mention of it other than it was used on certain songs. Most attention has gone usually to the Epiphones and Rics. Speaking of which, I'd love to get a copy of that Beatles Gear book to read.

Do mean the ones where Paul plays bass or the other way around?

:D

Oh yeah, Gretsch was a big one, too. I was thinking about John when I mentioned Epis and Rics. Although, I think he may have had a Gretsch or two pass through his hands.

Speaking of Beatles guitars, here is a site I found about it a while back:

The Beatles' association with Fender began in the mid-1960's when John and George acquired their first Strat for studio use in 1965.
