Since I can't get the setup, configuration and look that I want in an existing Fender model, I'm building a bass with Fender parts. I like the neck on this $300 jaguar bass (block inlay, black headstock), http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU0327900.

I know this bass is made in Indonesia, as apposed to MIM, MIJ or US. But the woods all the same. Is it nothing more than the craftsmanship?

I know I can go to Warmoth, etc, but would like to make it all fender if I can find one I like.

Any thoughts on the differences or what I should look for when checking out the neck on an inexpensive guitar?

Thanks

Bo

Wood is wood is like saying motor oil is motor oil. It isn't all the same. Some of the Asian made guitars use high grade wood, some don't. The same can be said of fret wire. Some of the Asian frets are inferior and wear prematurely. You could say that some of the Asian fret wire is softer than USA or MIM wire. A good truss rod system is essential. Often the truss systems on Asian necks are inferior merely because again the metal is softer and the threads in the nut or on the rod will strip out easier. Truss rods, even on some USA instruments are temperamental and the source of many critical problems. Many Asian made necks are huge radius necks, meaning they are almost flat. I actually like a large radius neck, 11.5 to 14 inches is great. Just because it has the Fender peghead shaped headstock does not make it a Fender. That is why Squier is a separate line.

I agree with brotherdave, wood and all of the components have variations in quality. Certainly many of the Squier Models are impressive for the money and you might get lucky with an excellent bang for the dollar, you usually get what you pay for in regards to quality & consistency.

Nothing is ever the same but always different even when it isn't and even sometimes.
