I have a fender HM 4 Bass. The neck says made in Japan. The back neck plate is stamped Made in USA. I have had this bass for years now. Besides the usual dings and scratches It still plays great. Is this bass a good candidate for a restoration on the body. It is white and the finish is thick like polyurethane. Has anyone have any info on it Thanks

From what you posted, here is the info on your bass. It has a Japanese HM 4 neck. It has an American neck plate. So, you have a parts bass.

I have a yellowed, white HM, as well. According to the headstock, neck plate, and serial number, it's American made. I am in the process of refinishing it. Got the second coat of stripper on the front right now. I can't seem to dig up any info on it. I'm curious about the wood the body is made of. It's kind of amber colored. Looks really warm. Doesn't seem to have much grain to it, though. If it turns out that it has a decent grain, I might just leave it natural.

Yep there were USA HM basses, about 1990. They retained the same design as the Japanese ones. Some had a wow finish that was a crackle paint. Awesome scarce instruments.

I really like the graphite layer between the neck and the fingerboard.

I love this bass. It's the most non-Fender sounding Fender bass I've encountered. The five position switch gives you some really humbuckery sounding combos. Great Jazz sized neck, light and well balanced. For some reason they don't seem to go for very much used, when you find them, even though they are pretty rare. I think it's because they fall so far outside the typical Fender aesthetic.

Please post pix of the refinish project.

This bass features three Silver Lace Sensor Jazz Bass pickups, 5-way switching and a Kubicki 2-band EQ.

Squier HM Basses featured Talon-style headstocks and P/J pickups.

When I got mine, the Technician at Guitar Center had to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod. Once the neck is off the body, you will see the adjustment, I think it was a standard slotted screwdriver. It's a real pain to get it right. Good luck.

I always thought that it would be cool to get one of these and put a Kahler Bass Trem on it and making it kind of like a Bass Strat.

Yeah, was really busy. Bad break-up (she took the computer), new band, dating again, working 7 days a week etc. Finally figured I'd come back.

Sorry for your misfortune ( at least she didn't get your bass). Good to see you again.

Life just has a way of coming at you, doesn't it?
