Tommy used a variety of Fender Precision and Jazz Basses over the years, with the most famous being his battered old Olympic White '64 Jazz.

Was that the one Stevie Ray bought for him?

The Olympic White '62 Jazz he had before he even met SRV. He used it at Woodstock when he played with Johnny Winter and The Progressive Blues Experiment long, long before SRV and Double Trouble. Jimi Hendrix played that '62 Jazz also in NYC at Steve Paul's Scene club one night when Mr. Shannon was there just jamming. He's become afraid to take it out of the house. The bass gifted him from SRV was a 1957 P-Bass upon which SRV had wood burned engraved the words "Soul to Soul" upon it. At last report his main gigging bass was a Fender Deluxe Jazz, which he got as a Fender endorsing artist. He has many other basses by several makers, but obviously he seems to lean toward a Fender Jazz when gigging. It is often forgotten that Mr. Shannon is a fair guitarist also. He played the lead guitar riff on David Bowie's hit "Let's Dance." Shannon's career as a bassist didn't begin nor end with SRV.

He made it to the final cut when The Rolling Stones were looking for a replacement for Bill Wynam.

Not getting the Stones gig probably bothered him briefly, it would anyone. But it was absolutely for the best.

The American Deluxe Jazz Bass you're talking about was a sunburst '96/97 with a tortise guard, rosewood neck and JS-designed "single-pole" J-style stacks & electronics. He was apparently not happy with the tort scratchplate and replaced it with a 4-ply aged white pearloid.

They finally found a replacement bassist many years ago: Darrel Jones.

Darrel isn't an official member of the band.

Yeah, I do agree. I do remember Hendrix used the '62 Jazz. That makes my dream to own one be revived again. Oh well.
