I'm new to the Fender forum

I recently got a deluxe Fender Jaguar Bass

I used to play a Squier P-Bass, and while I enjoy the more jazz-like sound sound of my Jaguar, I still want to be able to transition to a sound closer to that of Burton or Oliveri.

I intend to mount P-bass pickups in the future, since the pickups can be individually muted.

However, for the time being, I'd like help with tweaking the bass strictly using the onboard controls and settings on my amp, which is a standard Fender bass amp- Just the basic tonal controls.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I also am using a Boss DS-2 distortion pedal, and if this can help the sound become similar to a P-bass in some odd way, please let me know

Set the amp to 12 o clock, bung a graphic equalliser in between the amp and bass and faff around ,with both, to your hearts content.
A graphic eq is the first thing I would buy for a Bass, get your basic tones down then think about your effects later.
I have no recommendations cheap or expensive they will all do the job and you can stick it to your strap so you don't have to bend down to fiddle with it. Go and try some out and get a feel for them.
Just my opinion though. :)

Both pickup switches on lower horn ON. (Up position set toward strings.)
Series/Parallel switch in Series position. (Again up position set toward strings.)

Like this:

Passive/Active switch in Passive position. (Down position set toward strings.)

Like this:

(Both thumbwheel active tone controls will be non-functional which is normal in passive mode.)

Rotary Volume control near jack rolled back from maximum volume just a bit. Master tone near jack barely cracked from full treble rolloff (full bass.) That is about as close as you'll get with it.

You may find boosting lower MIDS on the amp beneficial if you have that option.

A distortion box won't help as these generally hurt lower mids and down. However an amp emulation device such as a Line 6 Bass Pod, Tech 21 NYC Bass Driver or Behringer BDI-21 pedal would be helpful in further shaping the tone to get it closer to a passive P.

Another option is an A/B/Y switch which allows using both instruments on the fly without plugging and unplugging. I use one. This is a remarkable quality optical silent switcher and the one I settled upon as "BEST FOR BASS" after trying about 5 different ones. This one is absolutely acoustically transparent: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Selector/
