My old 1970's MIA Jazz always had an annoying high-pitched hum when I took my hands off the strings. I always use grounded three-prong outlets. Now I have a late model Squier VM Jazz fretless and it has the same hum, only much louder. How do I get rid of it? Thanks.

This kind of trouble is ften a bad wiring in the bass, ground missing but with new bass the same problem ????
If those bass are original the problem is the the bass.

Your 3 prong outlet is it good ?, Same is the ac wire from the amp , not broken ?

What kind of electrical light or motor you have at home ? this do electromagnetic fields

It might be your wire between bass and amp is defective ?

Best is to try your bass on other amp and at an other home.

Ahhhh single coil hum. It is the bane of the single coil Jazz. Does it go away with both pickups turned all the way up? If so that is NORMAL.

You can do several things. Many people replace the pickups with Fender "Noiseless" or similarly made split coil wound pickups first thing. This is a very expensive fix at $140 per pickup. That will certainly cut noise but your bass will not sound as much like a Jazz as it does a P-Bass once you put these pickups in.

A better option both expense wise and tone wise is to do a full copper shielding/grounding job on it. This is a labor intensive process requiring under $15 in parts and you can do it all yourself using online instructions. It will help significantly. Also make SURE the bridge ground wire is making good contact with the bridge. Often removing the bridge then wrapping the ground wire around a bridge screw while tightening can help some.

Visit my resources page in my signature below, then click on DO-IT-YOURSELF SET UP AND MAINTENANCE. Once that page loads scroll down to the section titled SHIELD YOUR BASS. You should do this task yourself. It will take several hours to do a neat job. You won't regret it. And when finished it will have much less hum and yet still sound like a Jazz Bass!

I have had the experiance of using the noiseless pickups in Jazz basses and I was glad to read that I'm not the only one who noticed the Jazz with those pickups did not have the same sound as with non noiseless pu's. I took them out and they are in my cabinet, just sitting there. Dimarzio ultra noiseless had the same problem when I used those. They are in the cabinet also.

I've noticed my wife hums loudly when she doesn't know the words.
