Hi everybody,
I'm the owner of a Custom Shop Bass VI that I purchased in June (this one, but with the matching headstock) :

I decided after 4 months to change the original strings for a Fender set (which I actually prefer), and by the way, to set the neck "to my taste".
And what a surprise ! :?
when I saw that, between the neck and the body where stucked 2 "wedges" !!!!
What this SH**'s doing here ????
You understand what I mean ?
And what it means ?
So I went to see my guitarist. He's got a recent Custom Shop Bass VI too, like this :

and... same problem observed !!!!!!

Oh, a Fender Custom Shop Bass VI is about 4000$....

There are no "wedges" on my :
* Precision bass 58' Custom Shop Limited Namm 2005
* Jazz Bass Custom Shop Cunetto Relic 1996
* Telecaster Custom shop 1997

I'd like Fender to change my Bass VI for another one, because I'm not fully satisfied of the quality on THIS model.

How do I have to proceed ? Do I have to contact my retailer first ? The Custom shop directly ?

Thanks for helping understand.

Two wedges between the neck and the body !!! two pieces ( of wood or anything ) between !! This is unacceptable.

I had two "shims" in my 2006 VI neck pocket. Do you mean "shims"? Was yours part of the 2006 run, or made to order for you?

Let me know what they say. Because I'd like to know what my options may be, too.

lugimsam,

IMO shim under the neck is normal. I think I do a mistake with my answer to Ovo , I thought he mean each side of the neck and body.

Now I understand ,he remove neck from the body to adjust the truss rod and he see shim.

Sorry Ono for my wrong answer. Shim was on Fender guitar since Leo built them.

One shim is normal. Two is sort of unusual, but not unheard of. I have even used folded matchbook covers before as shims. A shim isn't always required but sometimes it helps with getting a the best possible setup. Once I had a bass that would not intonate correctly but was perfect after i fed the neck joint a matchbook cover. Go figure.

Without my shims, you can almost slide your pinky between the strings and the 15th fret.
And that is with the action set about as low as that bridge will go! When I took them out I thought, how bad can it be without them? Pretty bad!

It plays great with the shimming restored.

No complaints except my neck pup is so hot I have to lower it way down into the pguard to get it even with the other two pups, volumewise. But that has nothing to do with the shimming.

The trem lock doesn't seem to lock the trem. Next time I have it in for service I will get my Fenderauthserver to check it out. Not that I would ever lock the trem though.

Yep,
Of course I meant "Shims". (bad google translation... :D )
IMO a "well made" instrument shouldn't have.

Forgot to mention that mine also came with the bridge on backwards, as you can see in the close up in my last post. I have since had it flipped. The two in your pics look correct. I have seen others for sale online that had them reversed from factory. There is a thread from 2010 about it under the Custom Shop link on this forum. Either in "ask Mike", or "Let's Talk" sections.

I love it. But I don't see that the craftsmanship of this CS axe is any better than my AmerVintage '62 RI Pbass, which is regular production. And as far as I know, the RI didn't come with a shim on it. Not that needing a shim makes something lower quality.

Maybe I jsut don't understand the finer points of a CS axe. I'm just a player, not a collector.

Anyway, enjoy your new VI! They are very cool basses! Unique tone. Congrats. Post pics sometime.
