Hey all,

Lately my Fender Stu Hamm Urge 2 electronics have been very noisy. When I'm playing it's not noticeable, but when I'm not it's buzzing like theirs no tomorrow. When I touch the strings she shuts up again. I'm figuring it's some kind of grounding issue obviously and was wonder if you guys had any ideas or experience with this.

Thoughts!

Grounding issue. Check for cold solders or a lose connection.

I have the same problem with mine. It has been that way since I bought it used 3 years ago and I just keep "putting up with it" because the bass plays so well. I took it to Tigard Music in Oregon (a Fender Shop) and they claimed they couldn't hear the buzzing, which shows I took it to the wrong place. I think you are correct that it is a grounding problem. I plan on getting mine fixed this summer as it drives me somewhat insane.
By the way - mine is the 3-color sunburst. Yours?

Mine is black and it's 4 years old if I remember correctly.

The bass sounds awesome and is a joy to play, but holy crap the buzzing driving me nuts! Every time I stop playing I either have to turn down the volume or put my hand on the strings to keep her quiet.

I guess I'll have to take it in and get a full shielding job or something as this is nuts!

Let me know how you make out with yours as I'd like to know what's causing this issue?

How much for a good "sheilding job"?
Is this something that any regular Joe guitar tech can do?
Or does it cost an arm and two legs?

I've got the same issue with mine. I bought it brand new, a week ago.
I thought for sure that it was a dud lemon.
Now, seeing that others have the same issue, I'm not so sure.

Except for the buzz, it's the perfect bass.
However, for me the buzz is a deal breaker in certain situations.

Should I upgrade the pickups?
What would you recommend puting in there instead?

Shielding is easy and can be done at home. Copper foil or shielding paint can be used bot are available at StewMac

I'm sure it's "easy".....if you know what you're doing! haha.
For those of us who've never seen it done before, and don't have a clue about what needs to be done, where would someone find out?

Otherwise, it's off to a guitar tech ........($$$$)

What about an upgraded Pickup system?
What would you recommend?

Something crisp and punchy while maintaining a noisless sound.

Do a search for "Guitar Shielding" I have seen several sites that describe how to do it.

Are the Pickups in the Urge bass "single coil" type?
The specs say "Noiseless™ Jazz Bass pickups ".

Here's a quote I found:
[quote] These instructions apply primarily to guitars with regular magnetic pickups. Doing the shielding won't cause any problems with newer "noiseless" pickups like Lace sensors, but neither will you see much reduction in hum (which should be almost nonexistant anyway). [quote]

The Urge 2 has noiseless pickups so it's not that. I've checked all my solder joints and don't see any bad ones or anything like that. I had the bridge off as well to see whether or not it was grounded properly and it was. So I'm a little at a lose here. All the wiring seems fine from what I can see.

For those of you just joining this topic. I have an URGE 2 bass that is emitting a noisy unless I either touch the strings, bridge or the pickup selector switch.

Thoughts are more than welcome. Any Fender Reps check these boards, maybe they could shed some light on this issue?

Very interesting posts about noise in the Urge bass with active system... I just aquired a Jaguar bass that has the exact same symptoms along with a louder hum like the sound you get when you touch the end of a live instrument cable only muted. I get this "cable sound" by touching the pole pieces of the pickups or the switch plate that has the on off and controls for the active system when the active system is engaged. I know it's not sheilding cause I've done all that and the need for constant hands on the strings never goes away. As an added bonus on the Jag you can switch off both the pickups and yet it still makes the noise and the volume knob can be all the way down to no effect.
I've been playing bass for 40+yrs and a Fender fan Since before I could afford my first P bass in 1969. In all the Fenders since, I've never owned one that I could not use at a gig.
Since not everyone seems to be having this problem... and visually all the solder joints seem to be good... is there possibly a flaw that shows up in some of the onboard preamps?

Well it looks like I'll be gutting mine and going with after market pickups and preamp to try and shut this sucker up. I've tried other things, but nothing has worked thus far! :x :(

Update,

I have taken mine in to a well known guitar tech in my area to see whether or not he can find the answer to this buzzing issue. I'm hoping it'll be an easy fix, but I'll just have to wait and see. :(
