Im sorry if im posting in the wrong forum but im not sure what kind of bass this is, but i have the bare shell of a Fender JP-90 that i was planning on rebuilding. As of recently i got laid off so i dont have the funds to try and do this anymore and was wondering How much this would cost if i wanted to get rid of it. I checked up the S/N and its a 1990-1991 JP90 Made in the U.S. It has minor chips on the lower part of the fretboard. It has NO HARDWARE and is going to need new strings, It is only the shell.

someone help me out?

So you only have the body and the neck with damaged fretboard? No tuners, string tree, nut, pickups, electronics, pickguard or bridge?

These sell in good playing condition for about $500 retail. A pristine Excellent to Mint factory original one might bring $600 at the very most and that would be pushing it. I have no idea why they bring so little as they were excellent playing and sounding basses made in the USA and I really liked the one I had and I used it for nearly 10 years. I suppose the funny looking pickguard and poplar body are two reasons why they resell so low. But mine played and sounded really good and hardly ever needed anything done to it at all. I'd buy another one if I ever run across the right one.

In US Dollars ou are looking at a fretboard replacement and re-fret job, easily $200 or more. Tuners and string tree will cost about $90. Pickups about $140 for Fender USA. Roughly $25 for pots, cap, 3 way mini-toggle switch and wiring. These used black Strat knobs which cost $9. About $35 for a bridge. $7 for strap buttons. That is $506 in parts and the fretboard and re-frett labor. That is more than it is worth really.

You could cheap out and leave the fretboard alone at something just over $300 if you did all the work yourself. But if the fretboard is really chewed up you probably should replace it.

Basically it would not be worthwhile to restore and sell for the going rate of about $500. If someone offered you $50 as-is, then I'd probably sell it. I certainly would not expect over $100 for it.

Here's one for sale by The Evil Empire in 8 out of 10 condition, black in color for $500:

There are others around for LESS. I've seen them sell for as little as $300 in good condition.

Well I thought it was a pretty realistic appraisal of the situation. I think he'd be best off to sell it as is and cut his losses.

Thanks Ox. I don't know why but in my experience more bassists and drummers seem to enjoy shooting sports than say....violinists or vocalists. Since basses are longer than guitars...I feel more comfortable with the Buntline model revolver. Once you conquer the barrel-dive issue it is very accurate and for some reason the chicks really dig it.
