As far as which one is better for you, spend some time trying out both to get a feel for which one will "groove" better for you. From your music description, I would say a Jazz Bass would do it. Or you can get both and have it all. For a difference between the two, check out this thread from another forum.

Don't forget, you can have both a P and a J that have a PJ pickup configuration. That way you can have the best of both worlds. If you have hands that are on the small side, get something that has a Jazz neck, they're a little easier to get around on. Good hunting.

I'd recommend a J-bass for you. The precision is more for the "fast" rockers. And it's sound doesn't seem quite as "authorative" IMO.

Get both! For most money is an object tho...so you can get best of both worlds by getting a bass with both p/u's (pj set up) or the sound you want might be the J bass since you use Flea as a reference. Good luck trying both out, that's part of the fun.

Well, you have the Big Block model. That model itself is horrible.

I'd recommend a Jazz bass for you (OP). Just remember to try before you buy!

According to your profile and Amer.Deluxe V, both of you from SC, have the same Myspace page too? Are you two related or one of the same people? Just wondering coincidence, both of you have the BB too? Or parent/child?

You should get rid of that bass if you hate it that much. I had a friend that hated his Soundgear ('94) MIJ so bad, he got rid of it so cheap. There was nothing wrong, he just didn't like the action, it was a good bass, my cousin ended buying it for $150(it was $550 when he got it, 2 mo later my cousin bought it) and played with it for 7 yrs and sold it for $150 lol. I don't know where I'm going with this. Sorry for the rambling.

Back on topic, OP, try both out and get the one that sounds the best to you.

Get a P-Bass if you want heavier bottom end.

Get a J-Bass if you want a thinner neck.

Those are the two reasons most people gravitate one way or the other.

For you, definately a jazz bass.

The Difference:

Jazz bass is the lighter/brighter sounding of the two.
Precision Bass is the muddier/heavyer sounding.

I play a variety of styles (including heavy metal) so i went with an American Deluxe Precision Bass because of the tone control and just the heavyer sound.
