I just bought a used bass and it has a new neck and the plate is blank now. I was told it was a Fender Precision Bass. How can I tell if this bass is a Fender or a Squier Precision Bass?

Thanks

How about a picture ? it will help, its a general question and without any info its not that easy, with some info it will help.
It does'nt have a decal on the headstock ? even the serial number can allow us to tell you where and when this bass was...,got the serial..? back of the headstock it should be found,Yes Hmmm, back of neck it should be(My best net Yoda impression).
No prob,pics better,serial best,both even better.

The neck is not the original neck and the plate on the back to secure the neck is new also, so there is nothing on the headstock or the plate.

Looks like a 90's model Mexican made,if you remove the neck there will be a pocket in the body and there SHOULD be something stamped or a sticker with a serial number, also you can remove the pickgaurd and theres sometimes a sticker there too with some info, only going by the bridge and the volume/tone nobs it looks 90's Mexican blizzard white.
How much was it,price may reflect type
After some investigating it can possibly be a Mexican Squier, for 1 or 2 years when Fender was pulling out of Korea to change where they made their Squier basses they wanted a new place to build them but for some reason while waiting to switch everything over to the new Indonesian factory it was'nt being done fast enuff so they had the Mexican plant make the Squiers untill Indonesia was ready to start production.
Its actually a good thing to hope for because the Squiers were made mostly from all the same parts as the more expensive up-graded Standard line, basically the 180.00$ Squier and the 385.00$ Standard models were just about the same bass so all the people who bought Squiers really got a better bass in the Standard model.
This is pretty accurate info, its not etched in stone but I believe it to be true the years and models may vary in accuracy a bit but for the most part I believe them true.

Thanks for all the info man. I pulled the pick guard off and still no numbers. Eventually I will pull the neck off and check. I bought it used at Guitar Center for 100 and they had it labeled as a Fender. I think it sold so cheap due to stickers (Haha not even good stickers) were all over the body and it had a new neck. The bass sounds and plays excellent. It was a steal for sure.

Technically its Squier by Fender if in fact it's found to actually be a Squier and not a MIM standard,As far as used stuff most stores dont care with low-end stuff either way,to them its still a Fender no matter what without any decals and no positive proof they only will pay a Squier price for it 50.00$-60.00$ for it.
Thats the least amt pd for anybass,if its not worth at least that they wont even buy it,if it plays good and sounds good to you no matter what it has Fender headstock and any decal cant make ANY bass play,or sound worse nor better.

There was also a model with an all black Fender headstock logo called the "Black Label" series. These had an all black Fender logo similar to the all black Squier logo applied in the same fashion to the headstock. It appears almost to be a silk screen paint process instead of a waterslide decal. The Fender MIM Black Label basses cost less than the Standards and used some less expensive components. Without the original neck on one about the only way to tell is to look at the electronics and compare them to a known legit MIM Standard. Interesting note. Saw a guy playing a MIM Standard P-Bass with the white knobs last week at a club. It sounded fantastic. He was using the Acoustic 600 head and a single 12" Dr. Bass cab and an XLR out to the PA.

The little know Jewels of the 90s were the evicted Squiers that were no longer made in Korea but in the Mexican plant while the Indonesia factory was still being finished,so essentially if you have a Squier that was made in Mexico you actually have a standard model Mex,all the standards for a few yrs had the white strat nobs untill they perm. switched to chrome ones so they really dont help determine the standard series to be compared to ...?
They were decent basses that were made well enuff for them to be almost impossible to distinguish from the MIM standard series those couple of years, some compare them to the "Pro-Tone" Korean basses that were the very FIRST design of the imported vintage series basses, they had a serial number that started with the sequence of V/N, I know its Vintage ...? something or other, but I dont know for sure, but what I do know is they are really good basses equal to the Standard model being built 2 ft from them.
Absolutely
