Hey all, I'm planning on copper shielding a passive PJ bass (Warmoth body w/Fender Electronics), and I have a (maybe dumb) question:

Since the P Bass pickup is a split coil humbucking PU, do I need to shield its cavity, or can I skip it and just shield the J bass PU and control cavities and get the same noise reduction?

Thanks in advance!

I would not shield the split coil pickup cavity unless the bass is already disassembled. It will be of little benefit but once fully shielded you can say you did everything you could. The single coil pickup cavity and control cavity shielding will make much more difference.

For Jazzes, 1st Generation Single Coil P-Basses and any other instrument with single coil pickups, in my opinion copper shielding to ground is a very cost effective upgrade. On P-Basses they are already so quiet that it really has a minute benefit, if any. I have collected several links regarding how to use copper tape and sheeting to shield an instrument and links to soldering tips for those without experience soldering. With these links it's so easy a caveman can do it. Putting one bead of solder on every seam is a good idea but many people skip that step and still get an effective shield job. Here is the link to the page and the info is under the SHIELD YOUR BASS and SOLDERING IS A SKILL: http://brotherdave.com/add_maint.htm
