Ok, I know absolutely nothing about amps, really, and I'm thinking about buying a new amp. I want an amp w/ amp head, something with more than one input so I can plug in a mic or drum set. Any suggesttions?

OK, how much are you thinking of spending? There are lots of amps out there...you obviously want a 1/2 stack at least. There are Ampeg, SWR, GK, Fender, Peavey, Hartke, Trace Elliot, Orange, etc...money is the big decider with non combo amps. Find the one you like, test them out, set up how you need it set up when you test them. Happy hunting and update us.

I don't have enough money yet, but I'm willing to spend up to $400.
What do you think would be best for band practice?

I am assuming that you currently have a small combo amp and are looking for something that's bigger and has more power. Check out this thread http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... ight=combo
You can try and buy some used gear, either a combo or a stack.
Personally, I would wait and save up more money so as not to "settle" for something because of price restraints. By waiting and saving, you can open up more possibilities. JMO.

I currently have a berhinger thunderbird Bx108. it's pretty good, but I want something for when my band practices (it's just me and a friend right now. we still need some members...) so we can plug in a mic w/out a pa. i checked out the amp, but i think i should look at my local store before i decide.

i'm pretty sure one of the local stores only carries behringer amps...

If $400 is your budget, you might want to ck combo amps. I suggest support your local economy by going to your local music store, they will almost always work with you, but do research on the net. I would start by cking guitarcenter.com, musiciansfriend.com, Samash.com, and others. Then go to your local music shop and try 'em out. You should be able to find something. Another option is Ebay, look for used ones, you might be able to get a great deal - the downside is someone might outbid and it becomes more expensive than what price it actually started with.

I agree. Also, be aware of shipping costs on Ebay. I was really interested in a Hartke B90 for small gigs and could be had for $150 if you didn't get outbid. But, they wanted over $60 for shipping. Get real. So, what seemed like a good deal ended up being out of the question.

The most universal piece of equiptment I ever purchased was the KXR 200 Keyboard amp from Fender. Not only do I use it on stage for my boards, but because it has 4 independent channels with independent tone controls. It's been useful as a keyboard amp as well as a practice/real small gig bass amp, accoustic guitar amp and small pa, as it has mic inputs also. At a real small low volume gig I can have all plugged in and useable with great tone as well as my mic. Price was reasonably low also.
