I have a late 80's Jazz Bass Special (the fretless version). Sounds weird, I know, but I'd like to put a pickguard on it - I do not play it with a pick, of course, but I like the way pickguards look, so... yeah. Call me a moron, but does anyone have any experience with putting a guard on these basses, or any caveats I should watch out for? I was just going to order a pickguard off of Amazon or somewhere and put it on myself. Any advice would be appreciated.

From what I can see, the hardest part will be finding a replacement. I was just browsing, didn't see any,.

Good luck.

I just assumed I could throw a standard P-Bass pickguard on the Jazz Special and call it good. It's supposed to be a precision body. Seems like it should work - am I wrong?

A standard Precision Bass pickguard has two holes one volume, one tone. A MIJ Jazz Bass Special appears to have an extra pot for the extra pick-up and a selector switch.

Like I said, good luck.

This appears to be a standard MIJ pbass pickguard. It has 3 holes, which, by eyeballing it, *might* fit the 3 pots on the Jazz Special. The selector may not fit, but I could cut down the guard to allow for that.

Just catching up on this thread. I put a thread on Talkbass about this, but they all talked me out of the project. My Special is all black, so I thought to give it some color and shape. I fear, though, that there may be some slight body shape differences that would prohibit using a standard P Pickguard, dunno. No one could tell me. I think you'd definitely have to Dremel out a spot for the selector switch, maybe even just part of a hole. But, that's just a guess.

So, did ya do it yet? I'd like to know how it went. Did you have to replace the pots?

I have put them on my 84-87 and 91-92 MIJ jazz bass specials. Had to have them custom made since the P bass guard wont work around the control knobs and toggle. Roger at Jeannie Pickguards has the template for mine and can make you one in any color he stocks. He has a couple on his ebay store. I like these basses without and with guards. My favorites are my black bass with an antique white pearl and the other is olympic white ( yellowed now) with a creme pearl.

Jeannie Pickguards does good work. As long as they stay in business I know where to go first. Seems their online website is sort of neglected. So email them.
