Gentlemen,
This is my first post. I tried to post many times in the past, but there was a glitch or something not allowing me access.
I just bought my first used bass, ever! Ebay.
It's a Japanese reissue blue flower Precision. This means, as many of you undoubtably know, it's a '68 Tele vibe, but it's really a '54 Precision reissue with contoured body and a Tele (early Precision) headstock.
I'm aware of the change from "Made in Japan" to "Crafted in Japan" which is really just a name change, not a level or production quality change.
Question: The serial number of the bass has a "Q" followed by 6 digits which would indicate a 1993-94 "Made in Japan" model. Serial numbers under the "Crafted" column on the web site have a letter and 5 digits.
The fly in the ointment is that the back base of the neck has "Crafted in Japan." Confusing!
The bass arrived with Bassline Pups installed which took me by surprise. I'm just now getting ready to plug into my rig (Eden stuff) and hear it for the first time!
If anyone's interested, I'll critique it for you as my ears ears qualify it.

The serial numbers for Japanese made Fenders are being repeated ,because Fender ran out of numbers under the current scheme.

Don't put a lot of faith in the sites that date Japanese Fender basses because these numbers are no longer reliable.

Use the other features of the bass to verify its probable age.
Its a blue Flower finish 54 reissue Fender bass. When were these basses made?
Not in the early nineties.
There is probably some sort of date in the neck pocket.

I got mine new from local Fender dealer in July 2004.
P094 _ _ _. Crafted in Japan.
Havent seen the neck off to check the date as I remember. So I couldn't say for sure what year it is.
The original pup was unnamed. Just black with black ribbon.
Congrats and enjoy!
Best finish by Fender ever!! Hope they do another run soon. I want to get another one!
Please post pics.

There is a diff in quality between the two model names, there's a little discrepincy that the crafted in Japan and Made in Japan are diff.
I dont want to mistake one for the other and will re-post later on but its something with the guitars ment for THEIR market(the better ones)and the ones made and shipped out to other countries.
I believe the diffs are not huge but more like the lines of better hardware, american made pickups and alder and ash tone woods opposed to the basswood bodies we end up with, but off the top of my useless knowledge head I cant remember exactly which one is which(i think its the made in japan are the better, but not 100%).
More on this topic as things develope
