I'm a guitar player who has a wife who is playing her heart out to be a great bass player (she is already a good bass player).....yep, I'm "living the dream". She has been playing the Mustang bass for about a year now & is sorely missing the thumb rest that her Hamer Slammer bass has. Musician's Friend offers the Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass (sku #361336000000000) that I could probably use, but I thought I'd poll the experts to see if there are other ideas.

Any ideas that will help me to keep this woman happy would be appreciated.

Thanks

She's currently using the pickup as a thumb rest but it has too low a profile to be practical. Looks like it's time to break out the drill..

Thanks Sabre Lane

Just bumping this older thread in case anyone else has encountered this situation.

From past experience, the Mustang pick guard screw placement configuration is nearly identical to the P-Bass locations. Use the forward top pick guard screw location as the mount point for the left end of the rest (looking down in normal playing position). Don't anchor the right end just yet - tighten the left screw a bit and have her place her thumb on the rest and try several different angles until it 'feels right' and THEN carefully drill a hole for the right end of the rest. Some bassists have the rest on a slight angle so the upper edge of the rest follows the edge of the pick guard. Other bassists like it parallel to the E string. Normal spacing from the E string to the left rest mount hole is 7/8 of an inch and then the right mount screw is placed in the most comfortable position. This way, only one hole is drilled and if the rest is ever removed, simply countersink the right rest screw hole in the pick guard and place another chrome pick guard screw in that location for cosmetic reasons. The right end of the rest will be within 1/4 to 3/16 of an inch from the top left corner of the split pickup.
