Sorry for non-Fender question, but I though you experienced bassy people might be able to help...

The bassist in my band is after new strings for his Hofner violin bass, which is short scale. Can he use regular long scale bass strings or should he get specially-branded short scale strings? If long scale strings are OK, what is the advantage of buying short scale?

And any recommendations? He's after a Sixties sound... specifically Paul McCartney, Beatles (which is why he bought the Hofner!)

BTW, I'm amazed at what a good sound you get out of the violin bass! Are there any modern versions? Also easier to play for people with short fingers! Have Fender made any short scale basses? (I'm a Strat player, so know nearly nothing about the bas world!)

Thanks,
Paul

I recommend you get short scale strings. Because if you use long scale strings, you'll be trying to wrap the full width of the string around the peg (Hofner pegs are so tiny, I doubt if you could get the E string on). That's assuming you don't destroy the string trimming it to length. Short scale strings will start to taper down to core width just past the nut and wrap around your pegs like they're supposed to. As far as modern versions go, I would shy away from the $350 Icon and get the Contemporary Series Bass. It's a little more than twice the price of the Icon, but it has German Hofner pickups (rather than Chinese) and has a semi-hollow body design that would make it a better choice for Rock.
