Pulled the trigger on the sunburst Classic Series LTD MIJ Bass VI yesterday, ordered from The Music Zoo. There's a white one presently in stock. Expect delivery on the 19th. Wonder if I really need a pure bass amp for this one?

Personally, I think it depends on how you intend to use it. If you want to use it to fulfill the bass role, then a dedicated bass amp is probably necessary. If you are using it more as a melody or rhythm instrument, then a regular guitar amp is probably fine, but don't forget and start trying to pump out BASS or you could damage your amp!

Thanks. I'll put the question to you that I did on a thread in the Bass Forums. If I bought a Fender Bronco, might that serve me to double as a guitar amp, particularly set on it's Bassman voicing?

Again, I think it depends on how you intend to use it. I am not familiar with the Bronco, but it is only 40 watts. Even the webpage for that says "Loud enough to jam with your guitar playing friends" which implies to me that it is NOT loud enough to play with your drum-playing friend!

And... I just reread your question and realized that I read it wrong - I'm really not sure about the bassman model - it's an interesting question but the model of that particular amp might be modeling it in its bass role, and not in its guitar role. Also, I think it's important again to ask if this is for playing with a band or just practicing. I'll try and find the other thread you posted. Good luck - I hope you enjoy it - I have one of the mid/late '90s MIJ ones - I don't use it that much but when I do it's as a bass.

hieronymous(or anybody else with info)...what do you think about older big watt keyboard amps for bass guitar? Is there enough low end to play ACDC?

I keep finding Peavey KB300's for under $300. used. Would that work well with an onboard preamp in my bass? My thinking is a keyboard amp would enhance the availability of bass tones...

Does Fender make a large keyboard amp?

I really can't speak to this as I have never tried it. Personally I would be hesitant - it might be able to handle low end but not necessarily reproducing it the way a bass amp would - especially music like AC/DC! I would be afraid it might lack punch. Plus, these days there are plenty of small, lightweight combos that are actually very powerful. I'm blown away by my GK MB-112 II - my drummer isn't the loudest drummer out there but even when he gets on the loud side I still have the amp only on 4 or so. They are $400 from Sweetwater, can probably find them even cheaper. No tweeter but I still feel like I can get a big range of sounds - I play with both flats and rounds, the basses with rounds have Alembic pickups/electronics so I'm definitely using a wide frequency range.

Had some more thoughts on the keyboard amp issue. I think it might not sound so good, because part of a bass amp's design is the preamp and what is being attempted. I can think of at least three different approaches to bass amp design:

1) provide as accurate a reproduction of the bass's sound as possible

2) color the sound in a distinctive way - good examples would be Ampeg SVT with lots of tube coloration and classic SWR stuff for a good clean sound but not necessarily "accurate"

3) distorted - I'm thinking Orange, Marshall, etc., though they could probably also be seen as "coloration" but I'm thinking more extreme sounds

There are probably more but these are the ones that came to mind for me.

A keyboard amp is probably going to be similar to 1) in approach. If that is your approach, then it might deliver. But I have a feeling - and this is just a gut feeling, I have no evidence to back it up - that the sound would be disappointing. The frequency range of keyboards is much wider than bass, so you may be amplifying frequencies that are unnecessary, or even annoying.

One amp that looks really cool is the Ampeg Micro-VR, though of course that's more expensive. But I think it would be worth the investment to spend a bit more, especially with so much new, light, relatively inexpensive stuff out there (GK, TC Electronics, etc.)

Thanks so much. You own just about every bass design option there is, is what led me to asking. It doesn't sound like a key amp will pump enough low end. I need something that's crisp (and) thumpy for slap bass. Here are some options so far...

Peavey TNT w/Black Widow local area pickup...$250.
Peavey Reno Key/Bass combo...still kinda local...$150.
My friends Fender Bassman 400 combo(love these things)...probably around $300.
Peavey Mark IV(210W-300W/w/extension/and 2x15 Peavey cab local for $200.

I haven't checked most of the pawn shops, yet. There's an overflow of pro level Hartke heads and 4x10 cabs in the one's I have been at. Most are aound $300. total for the both. Shocking!

Hopefully all the locations won't mind me bringing my bass in to try them out.

Thanks again.

....oh wow. I found a Peavey Combo300 for $150. at MGR. It has a big beer stain on the bottom right of the covering. I played through one of these a few years back at a country gig and it was tight and right. The one's without the Black Widow speakers sound too boxie. Peavey also made some bass combo amps in the later 70's thru the 80's that were too thin in size and seemed to make the 15' flutter a bit. But not the Combo300....

Still, if I find a Bassman400 for under $350(that is in working order)..I'll probably jump onto that. Same goes for the Ampeg200T 4x10 combo...

Quality used bass amps are cheaper than ever!

Well the search is finally over. I found a early 90's Peavey TNT 160, mint condition(except that it's missing the top handle, that always falls off anyway) for, get this...$160. I don't think this amp has ever even seen a stage. Pots are clean..the whole 9 yards. Bought it from Sam Ash.

I checked out the Combo300...it had a speaker tear, and various electrical problems. The MGR guys were very kind, though.

Happy days.

Good deal, there. I know what you mean, I was looking through some listings for used bass amps and I couldn't believe how cheap you can get stuff these days. Then again, you really have to be careful when buying used gear, since often than not somebody gets rid of stuff for a reason. I've seen those BXR 400 heads for under $300. Those were kind of pricey when they first came out. I actually got one new, but didn't keep it for very long, unfortunately.

How has this flown under the radar?

I know it's not a Fender, but for under 600 bucks, I might get one just for the fun of it...

I noticed that a few days ago while browsing the site. It caused serious G.A.S. as well as the fretless P-Bass that they also put out. I've wanted these for years, but the originals were just too damned expensive for me, unfortunately. I reckon it will probably cost around $350, since typically they usually discount $200 off the list price. Not too shabby. 8)
