See the similar "Petition" thread for more of this picker's thoughts.

In this opinion, the VI is a tenor (leaning a little toward baritone) sax with strings...

...and most horn players blow alto.

Would the VI be played thru a bass amp/cab or a guitar rig? I'm pretty sure it's a bass rig, but just asking to be sure.

Bass amp, I would assume because 4 of 6 of the strings are bass strings.

Haven't tried out on a guitar amp. But I would thin that would not be good for the speakers and you would lose bottom end.

If your speakers and cab have some hair on their b*lls, a guitar amp will work for a VI, especially a 4-12 closed cab, if y' don't crank it too hard.

'Have heard a VI played skilfully at moderate volume through a '65 Reissue Twin Reverb and Blues deVille. Sounded hot. Brought out (especially the Twin) every nuance of the VI, which is a very complex instrument. One guy said it best in this opinion, "...strictly for grown-ups."

Moondance, Green Onions, Desifinado, Peter Gunn, Beethoven's "Moonlight," When A Man Loves A Woman, Sunshine of Your Love, Desperado, Sitting On Top Of The World, Bach's "Minuet In G," Old Man River, I Walk The Line, Folsom Prison Blues...oh, yeah.

Blew that VI just like a big ol' tenor saxaphone.

Parental discretion advised.

They've come pretty close. Fender Japan came out with the Jaguar Baritone Custom. It's just like the old Jaguars, (Jags are COOL looking) except it has a fixed bridge, and no mute. I know it's meant to be tuned an octave below standard guitar, but I've tuned mine B E A D G C like a modern 6 string bass, and the b string is a *little* sloppy, but it works pretty well. The string spacing is hard to get used to, but it's fun to play. A friend of mine has an original sea foam green Bass VI (bet it's worth a few $$ now), and used a pick. I can't stand picks, so I guess I'll have to get used to using my fingers on it. Can't slap worth a damn on it, but that's what 4 and 5 strings are for. [the JAG] is fun at a gig when people wonder where the bass is coming from when all they see are guitars!

Are there any lists showing production runs (# of particular models produced?) I'd like to know how many Jaguar Baritone Customs were made.

Fender Japan did bring back the Bass VI this year. Available only in Japan. BUT..might be able to get it shipped here by some retailers there. Cost when all is said and done would be approx $1,800 US or so, Been some negative comments about build quality, etc. especially given the cost. Personally...I'd get a Schecter Hellcat VI 2012 model (see below) with its three single-coil genuine Duncan SJAG-1s. Cost - around $700. No tremolo but if you can live with that it's a fantastic axe. Make sure to get the 2012 model as the older models had vastly inferior mini-hums. BTW LaBella makes strings just for the Hellcat VI. Fantastic quality and very inexpensive. Come in rounds (stainless OR nickel) or flats. http://elderly.com/search/elderly?terms=hellcat+VI+strings&x=0&y=0 Gauges are .095>.025.

BTW, these are not baritones. They are 6-striing short-scale basses. It's got a longer neck/scale (30") than a bari and it's tuned E>e one octave below standard. Baris typically have a 27" neck and are tuned differently.
