Yes, but I guess the market isn't big enough for Fender to keep it in production all the time.

The string spacing is very close, and I don't think most bassists or guitarists would use it as their main instrument, which would lower the market of buyers for it. Maybe that is why it is just released at limited times.

However, I love mine. And they do have incredible sound and are great basses. Nothing is quite like a Bass VI. Maybe they could just release it more often, if not keeping it in standard production.

I think that Fender should bring it back. With one exception. Instead of single coils, bring it back with 2 humbuckers. Most baritone guitar players that I've come across (myself included), are usually metal heads. I appreciate the tremolo (I've retrofitted Bigsbys to all of my Gibsons), but most people prefer the humbucker sound. Or even release it in 2 different styles. One with humbuckers, and one with single coils. I think Fender makes good products, but they tailor to a very specific market, and although this gives Gibson an advantage to many hard rock players, I don't see Gibson doing nearly as much for the solid body electric guitar that Fender has. This is just one man's opinion is. please don't kill me.

The Fender VI is a specific, highly precise instrument to make. Read: expensive!

Most of the last run sold at $2700-3000 street, which is way, way out of the normal Fender market.

The indisputiable fact that very, very few (Danelectro and Eko) other companies made or make an octave guitar (which is what a Fender VI is) should tell the observer something about market potential.

That said, in this opinion, the Fender VI is a magnificent instument, the tenor saxaphone of electiric guitars.

The late 1960s and 1970s models - those with the tuxedo styling and polyester finish made during the CBS era - were less desireable.

It appears that you're a huge Cream fan.

Jack's Bass VI was refinished in a psychadelic fool paint like Eric's SG.

Believe it or not; I am not a Cream fan.
But good point! Never thought about that before - I have a Jack Bruce arsenal!

I got turned on to the Bass VI by Robert Smith's (The Cure) Bass VI playing.
The SG bass is because I used to be a guitarist who liked Gibson SG's and thought it would be cool to have an SG Bass.

But my Pbasses are what I play the most. They are the perfect bass sound to my humble ears.

Jack is associated with the Warwick Thumb 4-string fretless for many years and has a bass bearing his name.

Not sure if you also play fretless.

Then tell Fender to make a Bass VI with humbuckers!

I'd love to see it, especially if they could drive the price down a bit. :D

If memory serves, there was a Fender Japan VI about 6-8 years ago and it sold in the $1300 street range. May not have had a vibrato.

Japanese Bass VI was 1996.
Had the trem, but no mute.

I, myself am a BIG Curefan, and Robert Smith made heavy use of the Bass VI during "Disintegration." I own a stratocaster, and the body shapes are relatively the same, but I've never played bass guitar. From what I understand, the Bass VI is more of a regular guitar than a bass. I would like to know however, if a Bass VI is a good instrument choice for me.

From a physical standpoint, you should have no trouble playing a Bass VI if you are a guitarist, and want to play it like a guitar. A little harder to get the same clarity when playing chords though.

As a bassist, you will have to get used to the narrower string spacing for both hands and the lighter guage strings.

I am a bassist and love the Bass VI, but it is not a main bass for me because of my aggressive right hand technique. I need higher guage strings. One day I will try a .105 set of strings and see if that helps. Hard to come by in any sets other than the light ones offered by LaBella, Fender, and D'Addario.

Standing up, it is a comfortable play. Sitting down - that offset waist sends the neck way out there so it can be a reach when you play by the nut. At least thats how it looks and feels to me.

But it is an excellent instrument full of great sounds. I love it.
