I have a late 90's P-bass Lyte with Active Pickups that is constantly draining the batteries. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

make sure you unplug the cable from the p bass lyte to the amplifier. This will help.

Assuming you have been unplugging your cable from the instrument when not in use, here is probably what is happening.

These instruments use a 3 conductor jack. One of the leads from the jack completes the power circuit when an instrument cable is inserted into the jack and disconnects the power circuit when the cable is removed. What is happening with yours is that the jack is malfunctioning and not breaking the power circuit, meaning it is draining power from the battery all the time.

The best solution is to replace the jack. The 1994 and later Fender part number for this jack is 035157 and the part's designated name was JACK RJM 300. Actually I'd look at the jack visually, then get a Switchcraft brand model that most closely matches it. I've tried the Allparts jacks for import/Japanese basses and they are worse than the Fender Asian OEM jacks going bad in months instead of years. These typically are barrel jacks instead of the common Switchcraft type but Switchcraft does make barrel jacks also now and they are better than the imported ones.

This does not effect the sound as the other contacts work just fine.

Another solution is install a kill switch in the power circuit lead. This will require drilling and installing the switch so I really don't recommend it.

A temporary alternative is to remove the battery when not using the bass until you can rectify the jack malfunction.

I also should have mentioned that this is a very common problem with aging Asian active basses, so you did not get a "lemon." Eventually they all develop a jack problem of some sort. In as much as the barrel type jacks are sealed, you can't do much to repair them and replacing them is about the only option. I'd just get a 3 conductor Switchcraft jack that looks like the one in there. I can't find the Fender part at my usual part sources so it may no longer be available, but feel free to check with an authorized Fender dealer or Service Center.
