Rev, that's the thing with sound, we like what we like. It's tough to describe to others. Certain amps amplify the "sound" we like and we get attached to it :D

Ashdown, Eden, Orange, Trace Elliot, Carvin, Ampeg (and plenty others) have that thick, full, kick you in the chest while you're down thump that every bassist like. Can't go wrong with these amps as far as sound, quality, value (to an extent). They have been in the bass playing sound so long, they've been innovative and revolutionary (some say evolutionary even).

PJB, do those brands manufacture affordable amps (say no more than USD$400)? Or do they only have top of the line amps? I think I've seen relatively cheap Orange amps around, but not of the other brands.

Carlos, I think Ashdown has a combo under $500, but it's not even 200w IIRC. Eden makes a micro combo, but I never count those micro amps. Trace Elliot, don't even ask, so pricey, but I'm so in love with that brand...Orange has a value amp, but not in tube, it's solid state combo, under $500. Orange is known for their cabinets too. Carvin, boutique brand (kinda) with out the boutique price, but it's still expensive. I go with buy an expensive model of a mid line brand, can't go wrong. I guess that's why I went with the Hartke I got, I paid over $500 for the head I have back in '94. The equivalent model now, minus some features - HA5500 is selling for the same price I bought mine with more feature :) Lucky me, or just got robbed back in '94. LOL!

Those sound still too professional for me. How about an amp for an amateur/ semi-professional bassist?

One more time, just for fun. Look at Acoustic, Kustom and Fender. All have "lower end" amps that are decent, each has an amp for $250.00 or less. I have a Fender Rumble 60 that I use for dragging off to practices.

And if you can, play a bunch with your own personal bass.

Good luck.

And my personal do it all, from cheap to very pricey but not too expensive, the brand that most of my age group started with - - PEAVEY :D
That Peavey amp I hated is probably still playing in some little garage today. That's why schools buy it, that's why churches have it, that's why beginners that don't care about "brand cache" go for it. If you can find an old TKO series combo, they were pretty good. Do they still make TKO now, I'm not sure? Those were good old solid amps back in the day.

Yeah, they were. I see them on Pittsburgh Craigslist at times. I forgot about those.

With the guy, you mean me? Yeah, I got some serious G.A.S. but I frankly wouldn't invest in a good amp until: one, I've tested a fair few; two, I need it for gigging; three, I make sure it has enough built-in effects to keep me entertained for a long while.

Cool! Thanks for the info, mate. Although the next amp I will buy, I'll try to invest at least $300 Canadian, to get a relatively good one for gigging in bars, parties and stuff.

Most definitely. Just remember, size doesn't always matter. Look into Sansamp bass Drivers, they will boost the output of ANY amp tremendously,
