I am wanting to upgrade my (frankly rather small) bass amp. currently i have some crappy think with 0.0002 watts of power; so i was looking for something around 30-60 watts and under £150. what is the best amp to use? :?:

I have a Fender Precision with S.D SPB-1's on; and i may also buy a Epiphone Thunderbird (yes putting that on a fender forum is proably Heritical  )

All the above, plus Kustom. They're virtually identical to Acoustic amps, they have to be made in the same place. I have a KB 100 that worked out really well for me. I chose the Kustom over the Acoustic because it had a direct out.

Rule #1 play every one that in a contender as many times as you can before deciding.

Good luck.

suggestions from Ox and fj are very sound...before buying another bass, I'd buy a 'bigger' amp. If you're planning to be playing with a band, a more powerful amp is in order, with most guitar players having 100w or more. Sounds like you're in the UK, add Orange to the mix, it's quite cheaper there in UK than it is here in the colonies ;) Their 100w tube amp is soooo loud - tube. Not sure what kind of pricing for it, but over here the Crush Pix bass combo (100w) is about $470 - I don't think this model is a tube amp tho. Hence wait on buying a new bass, put the extra dough to the new better amp. Good luck mate!

thanks for the advise; i will definatly try out as many as possible, but i am currently a fan of Marshall's Bass range. considering what i need and, more importantly, my wallet; i will probably leave buying a new bass till later this year/ next year. instead i'll get the amp and possibly upgrade my existing bass :D

anytime friend!

sound is such a subjective matter, what I like might be different than what you like. I always like the fat sound of Ampeg, Trace Elliot, and Carvin. I also luv the newer edge like Hartke, from bang for the dollar value. There are better amps out there than Fender amps for the money IMO. But these newer Fender amps do have a good sound, just on the pricier end of the spectrum.

btw, what bass do you have?

A Precision with Seymour Duncan SPB's; and i play Rock/Metal (my insparation being Steve Harris, Nikki Sixx, Geezer Butler, Entwistle e.t.c) I'm a Massive fan of the Fender Precision, Gibson Thunderbird and the BC Rich Warlock (weird i know, but i honestly don't see why BC Rich are hated so much; though admittedly they're cheaper guitars are rubbish)
i play in a band with a Schecter Playing lead Guitarist; Tele or les Paul rythym guitarist and a drummer who thinks he's Keith moon

There is a Orange amp i quite like the look of but it is a guitar amp, does that really matter or is it just a case of wacking up the volume? the bass amp version of it is a wee bit on the expensive side but if it's a case that it's far better to have one designed for bess that is what i may look into :?

A guitar amp won't be what you're after. You could do considerable damage to it, especially if you crank up the volume. While a bass amp may be more expensive it will do what you need and perform as it was intended.

Maybe not, there are a lot of amps out there right now and competition is strong. I'd definitely try it out. It may be a keeper and you can always use it as a back-up should you buy bigger and better down the road.

For the price, it would appear to be a bargain. I have never heard of the brand but, it is very interesting.

off shoot brand man. Check with some local music store, sometimes these off shoot brand manufacturer makes the more expensive brands too...So you'll never know, you can be playing some expensive brand in cheaper tag. IIRC, Orange - head - can be either guitar or bass, their cabs tho are guitar or bass specific. Is Trace Elliot out of range too over there in the UK, it is here. It was the best amp I ever had.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this fj, but the Orange head are designed for both apparently, just the cabs are different. You have to get bass or guitar cab.

I think one of the best bass amps I've tried at least for my style is the Ashdown Mark King Head. I saw one in a shop and got to try it with the Washburn 6 I was playing at the time and it had kind of a bright modern tone really good for slap. The only other way I could describe it is confident. I know I'm using alot of abstracts that don't tell you much. It's kind of like that old saying "Talking about sound is like Dancing about Architecture."

Stay Brown,
Rev J
