I was in a SA looking at the MIM Fenders. The bridges on the newer Fender MIM's had a thicker, and heavier vintage bridge on them. Both in the J and the P Basses. Bravo Fender. If you get a chance, check it out. They look good.

Oh no! We all know what happens when you go there.

Hi PJB; No, the vintage bridge. The vintage bridges I've seen on the newer MIM Std. J and P basses are a heavier gauge metal. They are thicker, but the same design. Definitely not High Mass style. They are easy to see when you look at the bass hanging on a wall in a store where you can compare them to older basses.

I gotta check that out. That's cool. The MIM is starting to become the bargain again, except it's chock full o'goodies this time around.

I did stop at GC on friday. I was looking for an 18v power supply. I also tried a few basses. There were 2 or 3 or 4 American Specials, I really don't remember now because I thought the only two I played sucked. One was a CAR/maple P, and the other a 3TS/rosewood Jazz. Not impressed, the necks on both really sucked. They looked and felt cheap. I don't even remeber what bridge was on there. I do remember the strings not being centered with the pole pieces.
IMO Fender is trying so hard to cover every price point it seems, but at the same time they are sending crappy quality basses out there into circulation. When experienced bass players get these in their hands, and then end up not liking these basses for a misaligned neck pocket, bad body woods, sharp frets, cheap parts, crappy pups, poor QC, what-have-you.
Then we share the information about our crappy experience with "____" bass, and then a general concensus is created. "The American Special series sucks worse than so-and-so".
Then when new players come on and ask "what bass should I get? Am Spl or MIM Standard?" We tell them neither; get a Squier, or save for a American Standard.
I don't know. I would rather see great MIM standards and really great MIA standards instead of 45 different mediocre variations of the same bass.
I love my American Standard jazz bass. It is close to perfect. And I cannot get rid of it.

Just My Opinion.

I agree with your consensus Mike, the ones I played weren't that great, but I thought nothing the set up couldn't fix. The funny part was the Squier P Bass Amber VM was better set up on the wall the the 2 Am Spc I played. I played with a few Schecters too...the problem I have with those? The EMG HZ. Why used passive pups then put 2 ch active electronic, when EMG's are known for active pups?? The are nice basses too, especially for the asking price :)

I was kind of hoping that, maybe I just ran into a couple of bad ones. No such luck, so far we've heard from four states covering a lot of country.

What really got me was the way they were advertised, "American Quality!", yeah, right. How dumb do they think consumers are? For a mere $200 or so, you an have an American Standard, a quality bass with a great case and added goodies.

I can't let go of the hope and belief that "Made in America" means something. I really shouldn't, I see it everyday, make it cheaper, make it faster, charge more for it.

Good reviews by everyone, for how many people view these comments, nobody is arguing with us. That say's something doesn't it?

Like most of the "old timers" I picked up my first guitar in 1964 after buying "Meet The Beatles". Played lead the majority of time with bass always hanging in the background, I laid down everything in the late seventies. Marriage, kid, bad, bad ending to a moderately successful band. Got religion and picked up the bass again in the mid eighties, , after doing the church thing until mid 2000's, couldn't take it anymore and went to the low end, back to the roots and broke all the bad habits and found a groove I was happy with, been happy with it ever since.

Met a lot of very helpful people here and have made some great friends who I really appreciate.

He won't appreciate it but, Brother Dave has helped me more than anyone I've ever known. When I refer to the "Resident Expert", it's him. I'm always amazed when we get someone in who has more answers than him, what a joke.

As far as "Made In America" coming back to really mean something, I have my doubts that it will happen until it bottoms out more than it has. Let's all hope I'm wrong.

While we're waiting to see what happens next, let's take Brother Dave's advice and,

Thump On!
