Very, very weird thing!

I just bought a Mustang bass in February 2011, brand spanking new. Looking untouched, not a single mark or scratch on it. Not a single fingerprint or sign of dust, all shiny metal parts, the strings were pristine. Then I thought about checking it's serial number on the Fender site and... HUUHH!??
It's a japanese made Mustang from... 1995-1996!!! (s/n: U 016808) How about THAT??? For 15 years it sat all wrapped up and untouched in a warehouse!? And then in 2011 it got to me looking like it just left the shop a few days earlier!? How crazy is that? I thought that 15 years of hibernation would leave at least some sort of patina on the finish, or the metal, or on the strings.

Has anybody ran into anything similar with any other basses or guitars?

Be careful, Fender admitted to reusing some of the Japanese serial numbers just because they were running out of numbers.

I don't believe that Mustang basses were being made in 1996. I may be wrong, but I Thought that that model was a more recent reissue.(2001-2002).

Good luck with your bass.

Either there's something going on with their numbers and it's a "recycled" number, either the instrument has been kept in a perfect vacuum for all those years.

Funny thing is that's when I started playing bass, around '95-'96. And all this time I've been playing Jazz basses, for the most part, just to find out there's been a Mustang waiting for me somewhere the whole time.

:)
I'm not gonna sell it! I've been running after this little "chick" for some time now and it instantly became my favourite instrument.
I was just worried "she" might be a little too old for me.
But that's OK, looks and feels less than half my age, so it's good enough for me.

Pop the neck off of that thing and take a gander at the birthdate written on the neck pocket and neck butt. That'll tell you for sure. Congrats on the great bass. I am hopefully going to get one soon too.

PS- did you try a few out first? Were they consistant in tone? I tries one out the other day that sounded as good as my Pbass. Was wondering if they are all consistant. Thanks.

I've only tried out one at a musical store before ordering mine, but I've been "stalking" Fender Mustangs for quite some time and what I can tell for sure is that all modern era japanese Fender Mustangs are top notch instruments with no inconsistencies.

My only regret (kinda) was that I've missed the deadline for a fiesta red one by a few weeks and I had to settle for a vintage white one, which became the only (export) color option at the beginning of 2011.

Its hard to tell exactly when they were physically made but I would'nt bet the ranch on it being a 15 year old bass,Fender has been making the Mustang re-issues for some time just because they were'nt produced for our market it dont mean they did'nt export them elsewhere.
Fender Japan has more instrument models being sold there and for export to other countries than they do for shipment here for us,It probably more of just a case of re-used serial numbers than it being a 15 y.o. bass. go look on Fender Japan and see what I mean about all the many diff models they have that we dont get a chance to purchase,But lately there are many stores now willing to send them overseas to us at a little more of an inflated price and shipping, and if it was'nt for those two factors these Japanese basses would be close to 1/2 price of a US made Fender and are made just as good or better than many models.
Ishabashi music sells'em or FenderJapan.com,it makes me almost cry when I visit,I would love to live in Japan with all those Fender basses,it be a crazed mans dream come true(mine)

Speaking of japanese models (guitars I mean), I'd love to be able to get one of their '51 Precision Basses. The closest thing Fender sends to Europe is the Sting Singnature bass, but I don't like artist models at all, plus it's really not the same thing as a '51.

Also, the japanese still make the Jaguar Bass with two J-pickups, I see. Unlike Squier, who has J+P or H configuration Jag basses.

I agree the Sting bass is'nt exactly the same but aside from the Sig at the 12th fret its only difference is the body contours that the 51 does NOT have.
I owned 2 of the 51's and the lack of the b/contours is'nt a dealbreaker but after playing a modern shaped body the lack of the contours is really much more noticable, aside from that and the sig the basses are as close as possible but sound almost exactly(as close as 2 diff basses can sound)the same,go on FenderJapan or Ishabashi music, they sell them and will ship them oversea's to us from japan along w/plenty of basses not readily available to us.

I'm already familiar with the Fender Japan stuff. But I'm not in US, I'm in East Europe and the shipment must be at least 2-3 times as much as from Japan to America. Plus all the customs and local taxes along the way. Available here it's pretty much whatever Fender sends to Rotterdam and from there the stuff spreads all over Europe. That's how I got my Kingman & Mustang basses, via Rotterdam.
