Right now it is smallish VOX 10watt amp I just got. The idea was to have a portable one to move around to jam with friends. I haven't gigged yet (and probably not within a few more months, until I feel comfortable with playing my bass), so I don't have right now the need for a bigger, better one.

I'm also renting a Traynor 50watt amp which is pretty good and loud, and which use for practice at home. It's about $260 new, so paying about $15 a month for it a good alternative to actually buying. Besides, I'd like something similar or more powerful and with more built-in effects for my own bass amp, as this only has a 3-EQ knobs and the volume.

The truth right there is - Ox' advice! I started out with a Hondo P Bass copy, I played that thing for over a year before spending some money on my '87 - which I bought new btw and still have. So, play anything and everything in between, and decide what you like sound wise. Oh also, try to play thru the same amplification to get the sound narrowed down to as similar as possible. Good luck and enjoy trying it out, that's part of the fun not a chore :)

lol my dad had a hondo p bass but sold it what happened to yours?
