I am looking to buy a bass guitar and i am not sure which of the fender range is the best by public opinion. It would be really good to get some reply's so i can narrow it down.

A few things to consider first. How much do you want to spend? What kind of music are you into? What kind of commitment are you going to make to playing it?

There are a lot of choices, depending on the answers to the questions above, you'll be able to narrow down your options.

The best advice I can give you is to be patient. If you're really a bassist at heart you'll be too impulsive like the rest of us and have a collection. Play every bass you can get your hands on.

When you find the right one you'll know it.

The truth right there is - Ox' advice! I started out with a Hondo P Bass copy, I played that thing for over a year before spending some money on my '87 - which I bought new btw and still have. So, play anything and everything in between, and decide what you like sound wise. Oh also, try to play thru the same amplification to get the sound narrowed down to as similar as possible. Good luck and enjoy trying it out, that's part of the fun not a chore :)

Ox's advice reminds me of this quote:

If you pick up a guitar and it says, "Take me! I'm yours!" - then that's the one for you.

- Frank Zappa

Very true, indeed. I'm just being playing for a few months, but I'm so hooked with the whole bassist role, that I'm already starting my collection. So far, I've got two, but I'm even considering trading my current SG guitar for another bass... I don't really play the guitar that much, I like the bass better.

It's begun. The best advice I can give you, as the voice of experience is, be patient, Whenever the uncontrollable urge to buy hits, go to the movies, go kayaking, climb a tree or read a book or something. :)

After you've done all that, go ahead and buy the damn thing. You'll just be a wreck until you do anyway. Then you can tell us how it happened and we'll all laugh at you.

That's o.k. though because we'll all start thinking that we're in need of something new and shiny. 8)

other than what is allready said; remember 3 things
1) yes it may be shiny, yes it may sound like the second coming; but in reality can you afford it?
2) just because your favorite bassist plays it or other people say it's good that doesn't mean you should get it
3) don't forget Amps. there's no point buying a bass then realizing you have no money for the second most vital component

if you're realy, realy stuck; get a Squier Jaguar bass. the best of both worlds

indeed, but i know of guitarists who have brought themsleves a nice £500 guitar only to discover they have only £50 left for an amp. the best thing to do is set aside money for an amp so you know what you can get. i recomend 50% on a Guitar 40% on an amp and 10% on Cables, Straps and a Case/ Gig bag

You can have a sh*tty bass and would sound halfway decent with a good amp, and a good bass won't sound good with a crappy amp either. I agree with having a good amp, before having a good bass. That's just me tho.

It's almost a what came first, the chicken or the egg, kind of thing. There are a lot of good reasonably priced basses out there now, Fender Standards and a whole bunch of different Squiers.

Bass amps don't have to cost am arm and a leg. If someone is just starting out, they won't need a killer rig. As you grow, save some dough, and when it's time you will know. Pretty good, huh Rez?

A decent amp can be had for under $300.00

I'm glad to see people asking advice and a lot of good advice being given.

Like I always preach, play as many as you can before you decide.

Almost sounds like I should trade my guitar for a bass amp, instead.
