Mixing it up:

L-R: Alembic Stanley Clarke Signature Standard custom 5-string, Donald "Duck" Dunn Signature Precision Bass, '70s P-Bass with Alembic pickups (MIJ), early-'70s Gibson Les Paul Triumph

This day I was matching the volumes so that I could potentially switch during a set - the Duck Dunn & the Les Paul have flats, the other two have rounds. So thinking of bringing either the Alembic + the Duck Dunn, or the '70's + the Les Paul. Logistically though I might just take one - plus a set of strings and batteries if Alembic!

Great collection. I've only heard one Triumph up close. It sounded buttery good. Fattening.

Always wanted a Precision with a Jazz neck.

The LP Triumph is a very odd bass with a host of complex switches and two separate outputs for low and high impedance; it came with a highly specialized cable for impedance-matching to the amplifier.

Actually, the Triumph has a built in transformer - there is a high/low impedance switch as one of the controls. The previous version (sometimes referred to as the "Recording") needed an outboard transformer. The controls aren't actually that complex - the switches are the aforementioned low/high impedance switch and a phase switch that only works when both pups are selected. Then there are passive treble & bass tone knobs. The toggles are a) pickup selector, and b) "tone" selector - "high" "normal" & "deep bass." For more details, see this page at Fly Guitars.

I really love my Triumph - with flats it can actually sound quite a bit like a Precision, despite the vast dissimilarities (short scale instead of long; set-neck instead of bolt on; low impedance pickups; etc.) - here's a soundclip.

Yeah I know. When I was younger, I kept asking him for Playmates of the month. That never happened either.

Thank you. It plays good. The 4003 in Ruby, is a bit hard to run across. So,.....I jumped on this one.

Adding some more to the Ric mix:

'93 4003S/8 and '04 4003 made for the Japanese market (they had already phased out black hardware/trim and binding by that point)
Image

'76 4001 in Autumnglo & '82 4008 (I no longer own the 4008)
Image

I love Rickenbackers, though I find them to be completely different animals than Fenders. The neck is much chunkier at the nut and maintains the same width all the way down, plus there is no comfortable place to rest your thumb (or at least I don't find it comfortable). But I love the sound!
