You are so correct BCassman !!! My turned mint green as well .... Good eye can tell ... You speak the truth wise one !!! and the thumb rest did react to the PG plastic.

.......................Trust me they came with 3 ply guards and they were a straight cut out with no bevel and they were Mother of toilet seat on the back side. The finger rests interacted with the PG plastic and they left a back mark on the pick guard when removed. That's how to tell if your pickguard is original.
I also own a 1973 Tele bass with the large chrome humbucker. It has a beveled pickguard that is made of different plastic that turns mint green.

After reading this post, I just took off my finger rest and sho 'nuff, there are black lines around the edge on the pick guard. Holy smokes did it ever change color! It was definatley white once, but is now an ivory color, not so much mint green. Also, mine has the big chrome pickup with Fender engraved on it. The pole pieces are staggered like on a P Bass, but there is only one screw pole piece per string. Is this a humbucker, or a single coil all encased in one cover?

I think the color choice beytween Olympic White and Vintage white can be confusing for a lot of people. Remember that Vintage white was originally just white that turned yellow over time as the clear coat lacquer yellowed.

I would expect that the original 57P-bass white color may be yellowed a bit to simulate an older bass or shipped in stark white as an original would have been and time will add yellow to the color as the finish ages.

You Telebass has a humbucker for sure. Its a great pickup and it really does emulate a string bass tone very well. Don't try to make it a high treble bass or even expect it to do what a Precision does in terms of tone.
A humbucking Tele bass has a unique sound, revel in it!

By the way- I didn't have to do any research for this post. I have lived with these basses for 30 plus years so I know what they sound like, how the plastic ages and (usually)what pickguards were used when on what basses.

Its getting harder as Fender changes and makes so much stuff overseas.
I don't know the new Fenders as well (after 1990).

I bought a brand new 1968 Telecaster Bass as my first bass. It was blonde and had what appeared to be a black Bakelite type pickguard. It looked sort of like a "Black Guard" Telecaster guitar. This pickguard wasn't very thick and didn't like to lay flat on the instrument all the way around. As mentioned by Old Shooting Star, mine was also a little rough around the edges as you could see router marks if you looked at it on edge. There is no way was that thing 3 ply. No way!

I have never seen nor heard of an original 1968 Telecaster bass being shipped with a non- white pickguard. I never saw one that way and I was a real fan of Fender basses in the 68-69 time frame.
So if your bass has an original black guard, I would suspect that it is a very rare bird.

The rough edges on pickguards were common on the Telebasses.
I don't know if that was a cost-saving move on the part of the factory to not sand the edges of Telebass pickguards, but I think that the
Telebass may have been the only Fender sent out with a rough pickguard.

I guess I should ask you if you still have the bass?
If so, it would be great to see some pictures.

Maybe I should have put it this way, I bought the bass in 1968. It could have been a '67 model. I've got no way to know since I don't have it and I don't know what the serial number was. But it was new and had hang tags in a brand new case bought from the same Fender dealer where I would later work in 1971 and 1972.

I traded it for a brand new Candy Apple Red Jazz in 1971. Regretted that transaction later of course. Since I worked at the dealer I got a really good deal but still I regret it. Some wounds never heal do they?

You traded it for a brand new CAR Jazz? That sounds like a very cool deal in 1971.
Hey, I wouldn't beat yourself up over that one. Tele basses were still plentiful back then and trading for a Jazz would've definitely been considered a step up.

Do you still have the CAR Jazz bass? If so I would love to see it.

Hey do any of you Telecaster Bass people out there know anything about the tuners. I have a 1981 Bullet Bass B34 deluxe. These basses came with a Telecaster Bass neck. I have been told that Fender wanted to keep the porprtions balanced on the headstock/tuner combination, so they used tuners that had shorter stems so the cloverleafs wouldn't stick up to high and look out of balance. I have seen the original tuners on Tele headstocks before and they do look shorter. Point is, I need a set for a TeleBass neck and can't seem to find them. I have put a set of regular Fender tuners on the headstock and they do seem to stick up to high. Anyone that can tell me what they know and where I can find a set of short stem tuners, please respond. I have seen these kind of tuners with short stems on original Gibson EBO's also. but they are engraved with the Gibson name. Let me know!

Bassdude812- Lets clarify what you are asking.
Do you need tuners for a Bullet bass neck or a Telecaster bass neck?
A Fender Bullet bass has a neck with a Telecaster style heastock but it is not a Telecaster bass neck for sure.
The tuners used on USA made Fender Bullet basses are a smaller Schaller tuner just like the tuners used on G&L basses and Musicman basses. You are right that Fender bass tuners will be too large for this headstock. You should be able to find these tuners ar Allparts of some other parts website although they may not be stamped Fender.
They will probably just say Schaller.
I hope this helps.

I have a 68 telecaster bass that I've owned since 71. The old pick guard crumbled into about a thousand pieces. Maybe it was mad that I'd been playing a jazz bass for a long time afterward. Any ideas on where I can find replacement pick guard?

You have one of the early Tele basses that had a single ply pickguard. The type of plastic used on these pickguards deteriorated and disintergrated and also emitted a gas that corroded the metal parts of the bass.

Chandler or Allparts probably have a pickguard that will fit your bass.

Good Luck,

The original Telecaster bass pickguards were single ply nitro cellulose If you have the Black & Molinaro book ( pg 51 ) shows what happens with the nitro guards .The guards after that had pearloid on the back of them. Heres my '68 Image

But now a question about holes. I've seen ones with 7, and ones with 11 holes. Which was which, and where can I get an exact replica replacement for my '68 that's being restored right now? I suspect the 11-hole versions were the 3-ply, PVC versions? Is my assumption correct?

No, my '68 Tele with 11 holes had the single-ply nitrocellulose pickguard which disintegrated.
