Please advise, i heard that active bass responds and sounds better to slap, what about your experience?

Is it reasonably easy to replace a passive pickup with an active one?

My bass is a P/J combo (Fender Precision Bass Special), is it possible to only replace one of the pickups? (say only the Jazz pickup)

Appreciate it in advance

In my opinion, it doesn't matter.

If you like the real trebly, metal sound for slap, active would be better, but if you like the more percussive, woody sound, passive will work fine.

Think about it like this in terms of tones you want for slapping:
Larry Graham with Sly and the Family Stone: Active
Larry Graham now: Active
Mark King: Active
Stanley Clarke: Active
Flea: Active
Les Claypool: Depends
Marcus Miller: Active
Chuck Rainey (Classic): Passive with flatwounds
Victor Wooten: Active

There is quite a large spectrum of slap tones on that list so over simplifying it to Passive=Warm and Woody and Active=Bright and Metallic is really not a good way to think of it. The variables on what makes a players slap (or any) tone is almost infinite. From gear and effects, to strings, to Hand position all have an effect on over all tone.

Correction,
Larry Graham played a Passive Jazz Bass with Sly and the Family Stone.

Exactly why I gave him a straight forward answer. If you want to over elaborate, that's up to you , but you don't have to correct people when what they said is correct.

There is a difference between active pickups and passive pickups used in conjunction with an on-board pre-amp.

For instance, Victor Wooten uses active EMG pickups. They are powered by a battery.

Marcus Miller uses passive Jazz Bass pickups, but his bass has a battery powered pre-amp.

I didn't mean that to be insulting. But I've heard some warm and woody sounding active basses. It is very much a subjective thing. I have a preference for active basses.

As for my sign off. I've heard Latinos say that. It was explained to me this way. We all come from the Earth and when we die we all go back to the Earth. That makes us all brown. It is an equalizing factor. During the time between we get blinded by ignorance, greed and ego. Saying "Stay Brown" is like saying "don't forget where you come from" with less words.

Stay Brown,
