Sounds like a beginner's instrument. They lack the tone of a full scale Fender. Find a 34' Fender Bullet Bass if possible.

Whoa! I have to respectfully disagree Dan. I think Bill Wyman and a few other Mustang using pro bassists might disagree as well.

I think Wyman used one sometimes cause of his smallish hands. He said the neck was still too big for him in a magazine way back when. I've seen some grunge dudes with a Mustang here and there. I've seen pro female bassists with 'em. It is fun to play a small scale bass at times. All the time though?

Stanley Clarke sure looks funny with that little Alembic.

The mustang was Wymans main bass with the Stones for over 5 years during the late 60's and 70's ( according to late 70's Guitar Player magazine) and mine for 30 years + . I had the pick ups changed when I got it in 1981 to get more of tone spectrum, but playing through 6 tens and 2 18's for stage volume, it would have been fine stock.

Just listened to the Wyman track. His timing is so good. It would be nice if he returned for the last upcoming tour huh?

It sure would. Father time is ticking !

Wyman was shown on Guitar Player Magazine back in 1978 playing a white Travis Bean bass, the one with the Aluminum Neck before Kramer came out with theirs. Jerry Garcia was playing a Travis Bean guitar at the time, giving them a little more publicity. I ordered a lefty bass from Travis Bean around that time and never could bond with it. Great looking bass, but that metal neck always felt weird. Anyway.....just getting off track.

A Mustang bass has its own sound because of its short scale but it its definitely a Fender bass. So I guess I would say it is closest to a Precision bass tone.

About Wyman and his Mustang bass and the Stone's recordings; the bass Bill Wyman used for the Stones records was a no name, self made fretless bass that had a unique tone. That' s why he used it.

He never used a Framus, Fender Mustang or a Travis Bean bass on any of the records and also remember that occasionally, a bass track would be done by Keith using a Fender Precision bass.

There was a U-tube video of Bill Wyman using a Mustang in the studio that has been taken down. I think it was from the Let it Bleed sessions. Keith Richards did the bass track for Sympathy for the Devil, but I'm not aware of other songs he did.

Just bought a Mustang bass, a month ago. After 15 years of playing mainly Jazz basses, I realised the Mustang was just what I needed.

To answer this thread's title, to me the Mustang bass doesn't sound like a Precision or a Jazz, but it has it's own very distinct sound.
