I did a bit of a shielding job on mine. Connected all the cavities (except for the pickups) with copper tape so that it touches the pickguard. It's pretty quiet except when I turn up the treble active or passive. Sometimes I pick up a little contact noise when I touch a string but it grounds out if I touch another string simultaneously. Not sure if much more can be done to make it even quieter besides some humbucking pickups. I did hear something about a better ground for the volume pot.

What are other people's experiences?

With both the pickups on, it should cancel out the hum. The one I played was pretty much silent, no noticeable noise or hum.

I played one other Jaguar before purchasing mine and it was dead quiet. The one I purchased (used so I have no warrenty even though it's less than 6 months old) has excessive noise to the point of unplayability in performance. The cavities are painted with sheilding paint and I did install a wire to get the sheilding up on to the back side of the pick guard but the noise is much more than a sheilding issue. Wireing looks good and follows the Fender diagram, all factory solder joints look solid but active mode will make a noise like touching the end of a live guitar cable (although much lower in volume) whenever you touch the pole pieces or the upper chrome cover housing the boost pots for the preamp. Since the wiring checks out OK and shielding is upgraded... has anyone experienced the preamp going bad?

My jag Bass has the same exact problem, and im glad to know Im not the only one. When the treble is turned up when the bass is in active mode, the humm is so loud it is completly unplayable. I had the pickups replace to the new SCN and it still persists. i thein Fender needs to do some research on this matter, and possibly do a recall.

There's another Forum called the FDP. On there this was mentioned as a problem. IIRC, the problem has something to do with the caps and the active pre-amp. What was discovered was that if you left the bass plugged in and on, and just let it sit, the caps would burn in. (just like an old tube amp) Once that happens the problem should be fixed.

Here's a link to the forum's bass section, you'll need to search for the thread. It was quite awhile ago, just to let you know.

Hope that helps...

I tried your idea about leaving it on while plugged in, and no resolve. I searched the fourms you listed but nothing mentions what your talking about.

There is a wonderfull fix to the noise issue in the Jaguar bass outlined on another forum. Here's a link to pictures of the wiring fix as well as
a really well done repair to the sheilding that should be in the bass to begin with....
http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f236/ ... wiring.jpg

Note that while the shielding paint in the cavities is a good paint , none of the cavities are interconnected and the paint does not come in contact with the pick guard.
I tried replacing the pickups along with this repair to find out that the original pickups have a great tone and further that hum bucking pickups like the Dimarzio J's will not work with the wiring system's great versatility.
In fact hum bucking pickups will greatly limit the usefull settings of the bass.

The Jag Truely has a lot of useful sounds!!! You just need to make these alterations in order to hear them over the hum and crackle of the factory spec sheilding.

I have a very nice looking sunburst Jag Bass.

It has to be the most attractive and the most useless bass in my small collection of 6 instruments.

I bought it out of Japan 2 years ago after being so impressed with my Geddy Lee, which comes from the same factory. I was also attracted to the tonal posibilities.

I was disappointed to find that the basic underlying tone was thin and lacked the sheer oomph and polish of the Geddy. In addition, the noise from the active config was absolutely shocking, frankly unacceptable. Despite the tonal possibilities, I couldn't actually find a good tone I liked. The low freqs seemed muddy whilst the treble reveals horrendous noise. On a gig, I found that I became quite easily lost in the mix. Another horrible feature is the inconsistent output across the strings.

The machine heads seemed imprecise also, really sloppy in fact.

I've fitted Lindy Fralin Jazz pickups which improved the tone, but seemed to upset the balance of the switching. The noise remains as bad as ever. It also pops much like the sound you get when you plug an instrument into a live amp. I wouldn't dream of recording with it.

Everything else is really nice, i.e. the neck, the style and the general quality of finish.

As such this bass has sat in it's case for most of it's time with me. I've not even changed the strings on it yet!

I've lost interest in this bass, I now have an '83 Squier JV P-Bass and an '84 Squier JV Jazz bass and these instruments are the best ever, period. Like. almost as good as 62 originals. (Not to be confused with later budget Squier models)

However, I believe that there are modifications one can make which can unleash the true potential of this instrument.Any suggestions??

Otherwise I have an as new 3 colour sunburst Jag for sale in a nice repro 60's hard case with Lindy fralin p'ups plus the originals. Anyone interested??
